Terrorists on Trial: Do We Give Them What They Want?

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 07:27:49 in New York

“The United States made it very clear to Iraq and its people that a civilian trial for Saddam Hussein, to be judged by a jury of his "peers", was an absolute standard for dealing with Hussein. If we're going to tell other countries how to conduct their justice system we need to play by the same rules we tell them to play by.

I rather enjoyed all of Hussein's bloviating and grandstanding in court. It it made it all the more sweeter when they put the noose around his neck and dropped him like he was hot.....Would you want to be a juror who votes to acquit KSM? I don't think so.....

Personally, I can't think of a better jury for KSM than twelve angry New Yorkers....”

“Tweeksmom,

You've reminded me of something I'd forgotten about - the Hussein trial - thanks for that. As for the 12 angry New York jurors. Wanna bet that one of the first things the defense attorney asks for is a change of venue? When denied I bet the attorney threatens to take it to the U.S. Supreme Court.

I'm just sayin'.........DD”

On Armisen's Obama Impression

Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 13:20:08 in Comedy

“The sad fact is that Armisen is simply not a talented impressionist (he's not even a talented comedian but I suppose that is subjective...) In some of his early sketches where he depicts Obama I thought I detected a little bit of potential. Sadly, nothing has been developed out of it and Armisen is not up to the challenge...Shoot, The Rock does a better Obama impression than Armisen does....”

“That is precisely what I was thinking. The Rock's Obama has a better delivery and timing than Armisen's.”

“Republicans go out of their way to prove that government doesn't work every time they get in power. During Bush's tenure, Republicans cut the Medicare Budget and now they're complaining about medicare is underfunded and not working because its "a government program"

Republicans cut funding for social programs to prove they don't work. Increase the debt by spending on military and borrow all of the money from China. The only reason government doesn't work is BECAUSE of Republicans.”

rlkinny replied on Sep 02, 2009 at 13:28:55

“Steele left out two words from his statement -- "every time a REPUBLICAN PARTY government gets involved in something it doesn't work". Now that would be a true statement! Witness : Katrina, banking deregulation, Food and Drug Administration mismanagement, ignoring the need for Climate Control measures, Energy mismanagement, the widening wealth gap between the top 2% of the population and the other 98%, the deficit, and on and on. Do think that maybe they're doing it on purpose so they can point to all their incompetence and say government doesn't work? Or, are they just profoundly stupid?”

Death, Fear and The Elephant In The Room

“In the past five years I have lost my husband, my mother, my father, my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, a niece, and the last straw, last year, my 24-year-old son. Three of these deaths were suicides. Three of the deaths were long, lingering terminal illnesses with nothing but pain and suffering. I'm sad to say it but I no longer believe in God. I no longer believe I will see them all again in the next life. I no longer believe there is an afterlife. Yes, some people stick their feet in their mouths and say the wrong thing even though they mean well. Those people don't bother me nearly as much as the ones who say absolutely nothing. It makes you feel as though your loved ones never even existed. That's what hurts me.”

GeriNV replied on Aug 25, 2009 at 01:24:11

“No one could possibly understand or share your pain. It is catastropic. I can only send you my hopes that you are able to maintain an appreciation for the sky, the earth, and the air. On a bad day, I hope you can breath in deep and still appreciate that day. Keep your memories, keep your life, and try to keep your sanity. The days must be painful and I hope you can find support around you. There maybe no afterlife, but there is today. Life was too short for them, try to live yours.”

Having also experienced tremendous loss over a very short period, I know that it can be too much for people to grasp at all, so out of fear, they say nothing. Still, I think you make a very good point, which is that saying something, even if it is a blooper, or something awkward, is still someone's way of attempting to reach out and connect.”

Worse Than

“Is "that one" the singular form of "you people"?”

SeanGardner replied on Oct 08, 2008 at 08:25:53

“The phrase "That One" is indeed relative to the incendiary "You People" phrase. It felt that way to me.

But then again, that's the kind of campaign they're running. Case in point: their treatment of VP Debate moderator Gwen Ifil. McCain lamented her role as debate moderator, and Palin pretty much blew her off as the debate got under way. And why? Because John & Sarah want America to believe (or, more specifically, "older whites" to believe) that Gwen Ifil was "in the tank for Obama" because ALL black people know each other (which is laughably absurd) and that ALL black people are enthusiastically support of each other (which is patently false).

From the black reporter being kicked out of a McCain Press Conference in Florida this past summer, to the black sound man being called "an uppity negro" and being told to "sit down boy" at a Palin rally in Florida this week, it is clear that John & Sarah would obviously prefer to campaign in the Jim Crow context of the first decade of the Twentieth Century than during the multicultural, multi-ethnic nature of the first decade of the Twenty-First Century.

November 4th can't come soon enough.”
