Should I have Sex with My Ex?

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 18:37:37 in Style

“I did this with an ex boyfriend years & years ago. I regret it. In my case, it was very casual for me, but the guy was still madly in love w/ me, even though he had another girlfriend.

I thought the other woman knew about our one night & didn't care.

She did. Not a good idea, in my opinion.

The Irregulars: An Engaging Bio of Roald Dahl During the War That Flags When the War Ends

I love all of them! But read the stories!

“I don't know if there is any "answer" to these questions, but I am still shocked by the violence & gore of many recent movies, and even further shocked & furious about the unfeeling abuse & violence against people today - i.e. the incredible gang rape of a teenage girl right around the corner from school -and the fact that no one called the police, and the cops & security of the high school didn't even walk around & check.
When I was a kid, the scariest movie we saw was Psycho. I didn't watch a lot of it - we were at the drive-in with my parents! Now I really avoid gory flicks...”

“I know that the GOP isn't for any healthcare reform because it won't help the insurance industry. And I know it's going to cost money - but for Lieberman to announce his opposition to the "public option," because of costing too much is really creepy - esp. as he never minded spending more & more on the military & the war in Iraq.”

“I would LOVE to be part of a Books section here. It amazes me when I realize how many people have no idea about history, the Constitution, classic fiction etc. etc.
I know that Kindle is very popular now, which is great for some people, but Google's attempt to get publishing rights for practically every book really bothers me.
I, too, read the NYT every day, and I read Sunday's Book Review, but it will be nice to have this - and the NY Review.”

“"Democrats have a history of being intimidated by the power of right political claims. We need to make the same claim as FDR here, we are not trying to bury capitalism, we're trying to save it from itself."

I agree with this, but I also think that all elected officials are afraid to rock the boat with insurance companies or drug companies. Insurance USED to be reasonable - now it costs SO SO much and also they try to scrape away any little savings you thought you had before. Is it "socialist" to name $X as The Limit of Profit for them? And we already pay for all the research for new drugs, and still get charged more than people in other countries.
I'd like to read a brief but clear article on what IS going to happen over the next 6 months. We can't afford to stay where we are.”

Masks for Sale

Commented Apr 30, 2009 at 23:51:16 in Living

“GREAT post, Jamie! I laughed so much at the idea of a couple walking on a beach - with masks on!

Here's what I think - and since I have had a heart & lung transplant, & I am required to worry about every miserable germ & virus that exists (because I'd be the first to go):
Buy a mask with extra filtering inside, or those ugly blue NK9s. The ones I wear come from icanbreathe.com - not cheap, but excellent! I got them first for airplane trips (recycled air!), now I slap it on if I'm in a small store, in a hospital (the worst), or the movies.
Yes, and wash your hands - but I still have to use Purell.
Masks are going to be IN very shortly - as long as they're not the cheapo do-nothing type, have fun with 'em!
Americans are getting more tolerant of masks. When I first wore them (9 years ago), people would freak out or accuse me of wearing it b/c of their class, weight, look....Really! I had a big row in a movie theater! People would often just ask me why I wore it in the airplane (what an idea, it's not a secret!).

AND to those who have said "The sleazy gov't invents these drugs then they create a market for it to kill us."
You know what? There are plenty of things waiting to kill us, they don't need to make them up - bacteria & viruses are”

Why Did Caroline Kennedy Drop Out?

Commented Jan 24, 2009 at 21:03:11 in Politics

“I pretty much agree with Ms. Ravitch. I was really appalled at how much Kennedy was attacked for being a Kennedy. It is true she is a private person, and she might have realized how awful politics really is for a candidate or Senator. She WAS from NY state after all, but Paterson wanted (who knows?) an upstater.

Yeah, I do think that if her brother had been alive & running for the same seat, he would have been respected more, even from his work at his magazine, George. We'll never know, unfortunately.

I certainly respect & like Caroline. It's probably a very good thing that her children have been shielded from the media!”

“I'm really surprised he didn't pick Carolyn Maloney - or is it Mahoney - from L.I. . I guess he really wanted to pick someone from further upstate, and a woman.
But Kirsten G. ???

It's too bad that Louise Slaughter is probably too old to accept that post...and this "good looking" senator thing is so silly - Hillary isn't horrible. Schumer's not that cute either....and D'Amato? Ugh...

I hope she turns into a regular Democrat SOON,”

“He wanted someone to "balance the ticket" from the beginning. Louise Slaughter took herself out of the running.

Congresswoman Maloney (Manhattan & Queens) got the chair of the Joint Economic Committee in congress this week, making the appointment unlikely.

My biggest concern about Gillibrand is this "require every federal budget to be balanced" nonsense. But she's not going to be making that kind of policy choice and that's such an extreme view that it won't get far. She was right to vote for the auto bailout (which had sufficient oversight) and against the second one for Wall Street (which didn't have sufficient oversight). Suggesting she didn't vote for the bill because she's a Republican doesn't seem that different from when McCain suggested that Obama was against the troops because he didn't vote for some funding bills (that were badly written and attached to policies he objected to). Keep reading about her. She's more of a "Regular Democrat" than today's blogs suggest.”

“"The mere fact that she's a Kennedy should be a point against her." -- Why is that? Most of the Kennedys who have held office have done fine work, so I don't understand your complaint....

I really do have mixed feelings about this. I understand the desire for an upstater, and Mahoney, Velasquez & Lowey have worked long & hard for the state.

But I still have a warm feeling for Caroline, who has NOT been a politician until now - I'd think some people might approve of that!
& I do respect Madeleine Kunin's opinion.

“Torie - You are SO right (correct I mean)! I have been bemoaning the lack of a broader coalition against Prop 8. It felt like all of the bay side people (LA, SF, Marin, Santa Barbara) were taking it for granted. How much work was done in the interior or southern parts of California?
The opponents always use children against us, as they make up unproven and not connected myths....Of course, Newsom wasn't helpful, nor was the presence of the 2nd graders' at their teacher's marriage at city hall.

"Milk"-ing the Gay Rights Setback to the Box Office?

Commented Nov 26, 2008 at 16:30:39 in Entertainment

“I believe that boycotting the movie theaters is a mistake; People should see the movie & not be nervous about anybody protesting nearby - it defeats the purpose of the movie, which is to tell the story of an amazingly charismatic & passionate man of 20 years ago. The boycotts are NOT useful.

I don't think the film should be made into a new cri de coeur for Prop 8. I think Prop 8, and the terrible defeat needs to be worked out separately... it is a very complicated situation, with some blame to go around. I don't think the LDS should be able to spend so much church money on politics without being taxed (10% as their 'tithe'). It IS too bad that we No on 8 supporters didn't spend more time in central California....
Just my opinion ;-) 2H”

“You state, "I don't think the LDS should be able to spend so much church money on politics without being taxed (10% as their 'tithe')."

May have misread comment. But, tithing money donated to the church were not part of the cash donations. Political donations were made directly to the campaign by individuals. If this was understood, my apology for the correction. Seems many are confused by this and continue to think the church donated cash to the campaign.

LDS donated a tithe in addition to the campaign contribution. Perhaps anyone who gave to NO on 8 should be invited to give 10% of their gross income to a charity or religion of their choosing. Perhaps someone can do the math on the windfall. Let's start with California Teachers donating 10% of their gross income to the schools. Perhaps more California's should follow the example of Mormons and donate 10% of their gross income to a charity or religion every year.”

I think it had something to do with the fact that there was a LOT of anti-semitism in this country, and Jews also identified with the civil rights of blacks for the same reason. Human rights!
After WWII, as far as I can tell, most Jewish people stuck with the Democratic party. I don't understand what Emmory is talking about, and other gobbledygook also written here.

Do Mormons Deserve Equal Protection Under the Law?

Commented Oct 21, 2008 at 15:29:40 in Politics

“Chris, the California Supreme Court Decision allowing same-sex marriage does NOT require churches to perform them. The people who say YES on Prop. 8 believe that this is so, and that if gay people can get "married," heterosexual marriages will be damaged in some way. I don't understand why the Mormons and lots of other religious organizations are bringing money into California to work FOR Prop. 8. I'm being a bit disingenuous...

The Constitution does not specifically mention same-sex marriages, so that right is ambiguous at best. ("activist judges, etc...). I'd think that "Equal Protection" effects every citizen of the USA, but it obviously has not worked that way.

I will vote NO on Prop. 8”
