Portia de Rossi To Elisabeth Hasselbeck: Gay Marriage Should Be Called Marriage (VIDEO)
Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 17:39:58 in Entertainment
“Yeah, right...pe ople who are virulently opposed to gay marriage are going to fall all over themselves championing the cause if only "The Gay" will call the same thing something else.
Homosexual union cannot be looked at the same by society unless the same term or concept signifies it. Why say gays are hijacking it? Maybe they want their unions to be seen as the same because they respect the institution of "marriage" and its place and worth in society.
If straight people continue to abuse the institution, it won't be worth much to anyone.”

“Well....we lie about se.x alot...esp ecially to ourselves. The biggest lie we tell ourselves is that s.ex doesn't really matter to us or our happiness all that much and that we are going to just love having it with one person for the rest of our lives.
That might be best for us and for society, but a lot of folks are kidding themselves when they take the vow of marriage that they will like this arrangement. That is why Tiger risked everything ....The wash of his self-brainwashing finally began to peel off. He "acted out" unjustifiably but understandably against the lie he had tried to believe. And no, he should not be condemmed for it because society has given us the brush and the bucket.”

“I am a big fan of Arianna, but the introduction of more US troops does not mean per se that Obama is imitating his predecessor in Afghanistan.
Even if one opposes adding more military, he or she must admit that any military we add could do better and more constructive things there. We made no real effort to train Afghan security forces when Bush was prosecuting this war. We made no effort to negotiate with the Taliban or try to peel any of these people off. We know we have population centers that do not want the Taliban to take over and face a real possibility that this will happen if we just leave. We broke it (even more than it was broken) so temporarily we own it. There is no doubt that we have to stop doing what we have been doing.
We need to hear President Obama out on this and see if he has an exit strategy that is coupled with any buildup of troops, an exit strategy that is based meeting acheivable goals and not on wishful thinking about Karzai.”

“But adding a significant number of troops IS premised on wishful thinking regarding Karzai. He is widely hated by the Afghans who we hope to win over. So, in their minds, we are supporting a corrupt leader by violent force. We are rightly seen as invaders by the very people we are supposed to be trying to help. This only strengthens the Taliban's resolve and makes them look more like the hero defenders of the country... Can anyone say Vietnam? Come on, all together now...Viet nam!”

“I don't think we can let any bank or investment house securitize the mortgage debt obligations and sell them. We can make underwriting standards as strict as we want to, but if given the chance to sell off the risk, lenders will sign up lots of unqualified people for mortgages. They will find a way around the standards because it means so much money to them.
Perhaps no one has an appetite for mortgage-back derivatives now, but we need to bury that idea. If the return of GS would not do that, then I want more....ca ll it "Glass Plus" we we segregate banking and investment AND we severly restrict debt commoditization.”

Obama Seeking Options To Send Fewer Troops To Afghanistan
Commented Oct 31, 2009 at 14:00:27 in World
“I think the problem with a modest increase in forces is that means we are doing "partial" counterinsurgency and "partial" training of Afghan security.. ..and those cannot be done half-way any more than pregnancy.
This is the problem that Obama confronts. I don't blame him one minute for taking his time. If he wants to do counterinsurgency in the population centers, he probably has to add a lot more forces and he can't establish an endgame or exit strategy, since everyone knows that all the Taliban has to do is wait us out.
It is hard to sell training security forces who represent a govt. that has little legitimacy Still, I think I would go with this option ONLY, sending enough soldiers to train the army, pulling out forces from the remote regions and leaving when the army is strong enough no matter who is in power.
It is the lest sucky of the sucky options... .”

Suggestions Wanted for "Can Capitalism Survive?" Debate
Commented Oct 27, 2009 at 17:49:39 in Business
“Capitalism cannot survive by itself. We have just seen that capitalism does not work unfettered even in the one place where you might expect success: the capital markets. It failed here spectacularly and survives only in a highly "ironic" form, as you point out.
Capitalism will live and die and live and die until we recognize that it must be regulated so that wealth is not concentrated in the hands of the few. We also have to recognize that a mixed economy is a necessary evil because private industry is insufficiently capitalized to fund many of the essential services that an operating free market economy needs. We are coming to that unavoidable conclusion about health care insurance now.”

“Freddie and Fannie stoked the artificial housing market by trading in the derivative s....but the mortagages FMs backed were not the reason for the housing collapse. The non-bank lenders securitized lousy mortgages that they never whould have written and sold off the risk. They failed in their obligation to do risk assessment and were allowed to sell highly leveraged contracts. Bush's SEC cheered from the sidelines. This is a failure of unregulated free market capitalism .....not Barney Frank or Chris Dodd.
The republicans grandstanded about CRA loans, which did not cause the subprime mortagage meltdown (CRA-back loans are NOT subprimes). They did nothing to rein in the non-bank financial lenders, who went searching for capital after Freddie and Fannie stopped playing the game a few years ago.”

“Everything was subject to regulations. The regulators were clueless because they didn't understand markets or the products being sold. Federal Regulations required that certain CDO's and other instruments be rated by S & P and Moody's. The Federal Regulations prohibited the securities to be rated by more reputable firms. Since they were rated by a US approved rating agencies, these investments had the full backing of the US government system. The US government had a hand in creating this monster and now we are hoping they fix it? Give me a break. The regulators hands are DIRTY.”

The practice of securitizing debt and removing the risk from the lender is the major culprit. How else to explain the collapse in the capital markets with a foreclosure rate that is still only about 25% of the rate during the Great Depression. The answer? Credit default swaps.”

You don't need residency status to be on the list....bu t you need to have the ability to remain close to the hospital where the procedure takes place for some time. Yes, he can afford to move and live there temporarily unlike many others, but that does not mean that he "line jumped" in any way.
One poster makes an excellent point about transplants not being palliative treatment, but at least we can see that this is a serious decision and not an easy one.
