Though I prefer Obama to Bush, let's not be hypocrites about "messages" . How many times had you heard this in the not so distant past:

"Bush is doing a TERRIBLE job with (fill in any issue) and must be stopped before he ruins our country!!!"

While vangaurd protesters may have cogent and coherent things to say, most people are lemmings and are not able, or do not care enough, to make their words mean anything.”

“"Bush is doing a TERRIBLE job with (fill in any issue) and must be stopped before he ruins our country!!!"

Reality check. Bush did do a TERRIBLE job on all counts. You know, we all know he was one of the 3 worst Presidents in our history. He left the Obama administration and the country with a gathering storm and a heap of basura to deal with. Unfortunately, not enough people were paying attention, including the 5th Estate, during his rule of ruin. Your argument is lame.

We finally have a grown up in the WH.”

“The issue is not what caused the stagflation, but why increasing inflation did not fix the problem.

From Wikipedia:

Up to the 1960s many Keynesian economists ignored the possibility of stagflation, because historical experience suggested that high unemployment was typically associated with low inflation, and vice versa (this relationship is called the Phillips curve). The idea was that high demand for goods drives up prices, and also encourages firms to hire more; and likewise high employment raises demand. However, in the 1970s and 1980s, when stagflation occurred, it became obvious that the relationship between inflation and employment levels was not necessarily stable: that is, the Phillips relationship could shift. Macroeconomists became more skeptical of Keynesian theories, and the Keynesians themselves reconsidered their ideas in search of an explanation of stagflation.”

“Those are Fiscal Years.

The Fiscal Year begins on October 1 of the previous year. For example, Fiscal Year 2009 begins on October 1, 2008. For this reason, budget years appear to not correspond with a president's administration. For example, George W. Bush took office in January 2001, but the FY 2001 budget was prepared by the Clinton Administration and authorized by the 106th Congress in 2000.”

“Hoover attempted to reduce spending?! That is utterly, provably wrong. Did Hoover increase government outlays at the same rate as FDR? No, absolutely not. Did he reduce spending? Hardly. He famously rejected Treasury Secretary Mellon's suggestion to not intervene (Hoover's criticism of Mellon has wrongly been attributed by Krugman recently to be Hoover's own opinion on the matter). During Hoover's term the total budget outlay went from $3.6 to $6.5 billion, deficits went from $0.5 to $3.6 billion, and spending as percentage of GDP went from 4.3% to 10.7%. Let's also not forget that FDR campaigned against Hoover's business bailouts and for greater fiscal responsibility (In the 4th party era before the depression the Democrats had the platform of fiscal responsibility).

It shows Cooledge as President in 1930 and Hoover's Presidency from 1931 through 1934 and FDR's beginning in 1935. In fact Hoover was President from March 1929 to March 1933.

That aside, the chart shows a budget surplus of .7 billion in 1930 and an insiginifcant deficit of .5 billion in 1931. But can we trust numbers from someone who doesn't even know which President served when?”

“Maybe because Keynesian economics, from the writings of Keynes, failed to predict or explain the stagflation of the 70s. Since then Keynes apologists have been trying to adjust his General Theory to match reality (which is why Krugman et al. are "New Keynesians", not Keynesians). Orthodox Keynesian economics is a failed model, pure and simple.”

“In arguing the window dressing instead of the view, is the unraveling of your argument. IBM is not growing their Mainframe systems sales they are maintaining it, if you go to any company started after the mid 90s you will not find one mainframe system. Some companies can’t afford the new systems, SAN Storage or the personal that can virtualize environments or share one server for multiple applications, so they can get rid of their legacy systems. Why because they don’t pay their employees enough money to buy products that their customers produce and in turn grow their market.”

“Good job at not responding to the logical fallacy in your first post, then setting up a straw man argument that is nowhere to be found in my post. I never criticized unions, I was pointing out that the "pay your employees enough to buy their products" is a ridiculous standard for many businesses, including IBM (which, unlike the auto companies is actually mentioned in this article). It's all tied into Adam Smith's and Karl Marx's labor theory of value that isn't taken seriously by economists anymore.”

remf replied on Apr 07, 2009 at 18:08:22

“I'm talking about Unions and you are talking about IBM workers buying obsolete technology ie no one buys mainframes anymore. I get paid I go out and buy a pair of Nikes and hundreds of others do as well. Nike then buys an IBM Mainframe and sites it in a corner because no one uses Mainframes anymore.

There is economic theory and there is economic reality, I don't have enough money to buy your product or your customers product, you cant make money and IBM go bye, bye. To over simplify it, I make money, IBM make money. Economy fixed now.”

We cut Auto companies breaks and they moved their Factories to Mexico. We cut Big Companies Tax breaks and they moved their call centers overseas. Those are $50 k, $60 k jobs, so why is it that you don't want workers to earn a living and by American products?”
