“Being against a completely unnecessary war that costs trillions of dollars while the economy is literally destroyed here at home is "posturing" ?”

“Oh, lefties aren't allowed to be unhappy that he renewed the Patriot Act and gave immunity to the telcoms? And that people are still being sent away to be tortured, despite all the fanfare on TV about how that's over now? I must've missed that memo.”

Agreed. But I'm not making a sweeping generalization either, I'm referring specifically to actual Bush-era programs which are continuing unabated, i.e. extraordinary rendition, warrantless wiretapping and other Patriot Act transgressions, blockage of the release of information related to past transgressions, TARP bailouts for the rich with no conditions but no real money for the people losing their homes, etc, etc.”

“Nobody here will comprehend what you are saying, much less believe you. You will just be accused of being a right wing shill, even though many of these same criticisms appear in articles on this very site. Then, after having falsely relegated you to that category, they will consider themselves free to go back to not thinking.
It's the Bush years all over again, not only in the continuation of the same failed policies, but also the bleating horde of sleep-walking apologists are there in full force to drown out any criticisms, regardless how valid.”

I am not an Obama apologist, but I know a sweeping generalization when I see one. Part of the problem is that this Administration has been singularly incommunicative so that our reference point is always Bush when in fact Obama is tackling health care and economic and environmental issues in a way that would have been unthinkable in the Bush Administration. The frustration is that Obama's innate caution dictates incremental change, and given the enormity of the problems, that isn't good enough.”

“You're right that the telcoms thing was pre-election; so that it means it magically doesn't reflect on his character any more?
He renewed the Patriot Act as a President and it speaks to the same issue. It's like a double broken promise, one during the campaign and then again a month ago. He called the Patriot act "shoddy and dangerous" and pledged to dump it, then renewed it.
Here is a link about his promise on telcom immunity.

“How is it different, vorapalmusic? I'll tell you.
The Bush adminstration spread the thinnest veneer they could over what they were doing, making it appear (whenever they even cared to do so) that they were "for us". Otherwise, they just did whatever they wanted, and their supporters went along because most of his supporters that he cared an iota about - the wealthy, aka "his base' - benefitted from what he did.
Tax cuts for the....impoverished? No. Tax cuts for rich people to make them richer? you betcha!
Those supporters that weren't rich? They have a history of voting and supporting things that are against their best interests.
The difference with the Obama administration is that his supporters don't agree with everything he does - and aren't afraid to say so, like Bush supporters were.”

“Some of the accomplishments are great, and many others are either empty gestures or have not actually occurred yet.
There are not a gigantic amount of broken promises, but the ones there are amount to pretty serious differences from what we were led to expect. How is granting immunity to the telcoms and renewing the Patriot Act consistent with Obama's statement of "change we can believe in"?
Is "it's only been ten months" an adequate response to this question? I don't think so.”

“His vote on immunity for the telecoms was case while he was in the Senate before he was elected. It was during the campaign - thus any voter had knowledge of this prior to casting his/her vote. Hardly a matter that a voter can now fault him for as a broken promise.

“Look, there are not as many broken promises as kept promises. The problem is, the broken promises are pretty significant, and the list of kept promises is inflated with a bunch of nonsense, like holding the first Seder at the White House, or ordering Gitmo to close (it isn't closed, and won't be in the foreseeable future--furthermore, there are numerous other Gitmo clones that no one is even pretending to close).”
