War on Christmas: Who Is the Enemy?

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 01:26:26 in Living

“"For millennia, CHRIST has been the reason for the season."

um, no.

neither "Christmas" (December 25) nor "the birth of Christ" were celebrated by the early church, and once it was dictated to be a "Christian" date, it was quickly melded into other, non-Christian solstice observances that had taken place (possibly "for millennia").

Oliver Cromwell, good Puritan that he was, outlawed Christmas celebrations in England, and the Puritans here across the pond forbade any observance of the date whatsoever, religious or otherwise.

the traditions we associate with "the season" are pagan Germanic Yule traditions. what *we* think of as Christmas was actually Queen Victoria's interpretation of the holiday (yes, "holiday," from "holy day"), blending good old Anglo-Saxon revelry and licentiousness with her consort's Germanic pagan symbology.

"War on Christmas," indeed. more like "Denial of History" perpetrated by the uber-pious and ultra-ignorant.”

Sarah's Palling Around with Conspiracists

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 12:48:25 in Politics

“refresh my memory: what's a conspiracy theory the left is promulgating?”

ProfessorDuh replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 13:06:11

“Oh. you know, that nonsense about how Americans are being bankrupted by the greedy American medical system. That silly assertion that we spend trillions to blow up peasants on the other side of the world. The ridiculous notion that deregulated Wall Street fraud could ever wreck the world economy. The idea that Congress is bought and paid for by corporate crooks.
"Conspiracy theories" like that, so obviously false that no one need even bother to consider them.”

“but to the man with a hammer, all the world's a stage. thus, in defending their "inerrant text" as "science," they can only view Origin of Species as a competing "sacred text."”

hp blogger Valerie Tarico replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 21:16:10

“Yes. That is exactly how many fundamentalists see it. They have their sacred text that they accept on authority and faith, so we must have ours. That is why they use the term "Darwinism" rather than natural selection or evolution. "Ism" tends to denote a secular religion (Marxism, fascism, socialism, . . . )--either that or a medical condition ;).”

if you read your - pardon me, OUR - constitution, you'll see that America owes its citizens more than what you claim - in fact, the constitution says we're already born with that, and that the country owes us the ABILITY to enjoy those inalienable rights. but I guess you didn't actually read that part, did you?”

Peeling Away the "Obama Phenomenon": An Interview with Paul Street

Commented Sep 15, 2009 at 03:19:22 in Politics

“very interesting. without challenging any of the author's conclusions, I will say that his work indicates that Obama isn't "a radical, leftist socialist," nor a "true-blue liberal progressive," but a centrist, which virtually all his campaign and his presidency thus far have revealed him to be.

hardly news to anyone who actually *paid attention* to the man.

and yet, there will still be right-wingers who scream that he's as far left as is possible to be, and left-wingers who will feel betrayed that he actually isn't.

he's exactly what I wanted in the White House.”

this movement is NOT diverse, it is NOT spontaneous, and it is NOT non-partisan - it is carefully manipulated by the very ones who sold us the Iraq war.

The Power of Protest

Commented Sep 13, 2009 at 11:18:15 in Politics

“right, because the Founding Fathers were protesting the Universal Health Care that Mad King George was forcing on them.

you're a bit late to start fiddling - where were YOU when Mad King George took us into Iraq looking for those mythical WMDs? where were YOU when the Puppetmaster was spying on us AMERICAN CITIZENS? where you YOU when they took your taxes to give to Halliburton? WHERE WERE YOU when they squandered your children's inheritance?

you really believe this economic meltdown started in JANUARY 2009??? my poor misguided fool.

don't give me your sanctimonious words - you know what those unruly crowds are doing, and it has NOTHING to do with "onerous burdens" - it has EVERYTHING to do with partisan politics.

and you obviously didn't even read the article, because it supports NONE of your arguments.

why don't YOU take LESSONS from the founders of this country and stop trying to claim that bankrupting people for medical exigencies is somehow an AMERICAN VIRTUE?”
