Obamas Discuss Marriage "Bumps," Date Nights, And Counseling In NYT Magazine: UPDATED With New Details (VIDEO)
Commented Oct 27, 2009 at 17:22:09 in Style
“It's true-- behind every great man is an even better woman. And it eventually pays off. How many other women get to dance to Beyonce singing "At Last" as the inauguration? It's all very sweet. And while they seem like the perfect Barbie and Ken out-of-the-package couple, knowing they had tough times is inspiring for the rest of us. Even super-couples go through troubles and have bumps in the road. Fidelity and Charity (enough to forgive your spouse's faults) go a long way in the big book of morals.
Let s/he who has the perfect marriage cast the first stone at the Obamas.”

Is "Our Deteriorating Atmosphere" The Best Way To Talk Climate?

“"manmade climate disruption" is a good one, as is just explaining the phenomenon: "Carbon and other greenhouse gases act as an insulator, so the more we put in the atmosphere, the more heat stays in, just like a thick blanket keeps you warm."-- then refer to it afterward as "our thickening carbon blanket"”
House GOP's Energy Bill Calls For 100 Nuclear Plants
Commented Jun 11, 2009 at 16:27:57 in Green
“Let's do the math:
New cost of a nuclear reactor: $20 billion + (a conservative estimate according to Florida Power and Light)
Time it take to construct a plant: 20 years (not including finding 100 usable sites, esp. given people's reasonable Not In My Backyard approach to nuclear, and the fact that since we haven't built a new one in over 30 years, we really don't know how long it will take)
So, the GOP wants to spend 2 trillion dollars to build plants that won't give us any new energy until the 2030s. Very nice.
And then the question becomes of what to do with all that lovely nuclear waste..... .my solution is to bury it in the backyards of the grandchildren of every official who advocates for nuclear energy. Then it will either make people think twice about nuclear power as a "solution" or limit the ability of their DNA to be passed down.”

“Part math and part nonsense. The economics of building nuclear power plants is not particularly favorable although a few utilities are starting new ones through the permitting process. There are of course engineered solutions to reactor nuclear waste but your statements on that issue are just juvenile.”

The House Fight For Energy Chairmanship: Dingell Vs. Waxman
Commented Nov 11, 2008 at 12:34:22 in Green
“Call your local Congressman and express your support for Waxman. The Dingell-Boucher global warming bill is CRAP-- it calls for a 6% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020 when the science says we need to shoot for 20-40%. Even John McCain is more progressive than this.
Waxman's global warming bill uses real science and real economics to make things happen. Dingell is too in the pocket of Detroit who are worried they can't make gas guzzlers any more (and then want to be bailed out by our tax dollars when they are getting their arses handed to them by Japanese, German and Korean car companies).
If you care about global warming and passing REAL climate change legislation, dump Dingell and support Waxman.”

Campbell Brown Holds Paulson, Bush Accountable For Crisis: "Seriously, What Were You Thinking?"

Campbell Brown is much more than that.
But it is so typical-- blame the press when they report facts you don't like. Suddenly Anderson Cooper was Karl Marx after he dared report on the problems of Katrina and FEMA. How dare they question the authority of our GOP Masters?!?!
Campbell Brown is expressing the frustration that a lot of us are feeling, and is one of the few serious news personalities out there willing to call bullshit on these right wing talking points, rather than just parroting them next to left-wing talking points and saying "there-- that's fair."
If Campbell Brown 2008 were around in 2002, we maybe wouldn't have gone to war in Iraq.”

“You misunderstand me. I'm saying wind is AWESOME-- the only downside is we weren't thoughtful enough to invest in the manufacturing of it 10-15 years ago and create tons of jobs. While we offshored much of our manufacturing over the past 15 yrs, we should have been attempting to replace it with green tech manufacturing, like turbines and photovoltaic cells. It's essentially the same problem with the auto industry-- that's why every single one of the 10 most fuel efficient cars is from Japan (and 1 from Korea)”
KillTheMessenger replied on Sep 25, 2008 at 17:20:51
“I think I understood very well what you meant my response wasn't critical about your position on wind energy.
I also agree that we completely screwed up on all renewables. And I am fully with you on the automobile industry being a way, way bigger screwup than clean technology.
My point was that it can not be helped at this point and that shouldn't cry about spilled milk. We simply have to import our hybrids from Japan until Toyota and Honda bring the manufacturing over to the US to create the jobs OR the American companies manage to catch up (although at this point it seems they don't even want to catch up, especially GM is on some suicidal philosophical path in regard to delivering smaller vehicles to the market - it seems they are having a death wish over there). The upside from saving oil by driving Japanese and Korean cars is by far higher than the downside of not having the manufacturing jobs in the US.
Same with wind turbines and photovoltaics. In time we can probably build the infrastructure (and somewhere I read that Vesta is bringing 6000 jobs to the US), but for now what counts in my view is immediate adoption of the technology.”

“The biggest problem with wind power is that not enough of the manufacturing and design of these turbines and materials take place in the US, mostly because of lack of foresight. Because we didn't make the necessary early investments, companies like Siemans, Vestas, and Mitsubishi dominate the market. It's good that GE has produced some of the best turbines out there, but they simply can't produce them fast enough to meet demand.”
