GEICO Pulls Its Ads from Glenn Beck Show

Commented Aug 11, 2009 at 15:58:04 in Media

“One of the companies that pulled their ads was SC Johnson, which is really ironic since Sam Johnson was about as right wing and as anti-union as they come. Its also a little ironic that two of these companies are insurance companies.”

“I'm confused by the title...

Sessions Uses Sotomayor as a Pawn in His Lifelong Crusade Against Civil Rights

How can Sessions use Sotomayor as a pawn when he is powerless to stop her nomination. It's not like he has anything to trade for. Sessions and the republicans are irrelevant.”

“To his "base" this seems a noble endeavour? They keep him in office. As a U.S. Senator he does have power even with his party in the minority. E.g., by the rules of the Senate a single Senator, anonymously, can hold up appointments, some indefinitely.”

The Nation's Most Ambitious Recycling Law

Commented Jun 25, 2009 at 20:49:44 in Green

“Interesting comments about a nanny state. In Wisconsin, we have had mandatory recycling since the early 1990s. Its so popular, that when a repub representative at the behest of the state's main business tried to repeal the law it never made it out of committee, and no one has tried since. I have never ever heard a resident complain that they have to separate out their recycling.

As far as the composting, it varies between communities. The town where I live (pop. 12,000) requires all yard waste to be composted, but not food scraps. Even so, every year we generate an amazing amount of compost. Anyone can take as much as they can haul away at no charge, usually by the truck load. As a dyed in the wool veggie gardener, its Nirvana.”

“This is not just an Indian and Australian problem. According to Texas A&M the Ogallala Aquifer which supplies significant parts of states from Texas to South Dakota is dropping by about 1 to 3 feet per year. California's Central Valley is also being dangerously depleted of groundwater. Even here in Wisconsin the groundwater is dropping even though we've had record snow/rain the last couple of years. Simply not recharging as fast as we are using it.”

“The public really don't care about this. His meetings/connections, etc. that occurred 10-20 years ago without any subsequent relationships are not that big a deal. Its like the Ayers thing. Its not that big a deal. Now what McCain or Obama is going to do about the economy, foreign affairs, medical care is what I want to hear.

As tempting as it is to bring this stuff up, I applaud Obama for not getting down in the dirt with McCain. I think it says a lot about Obama's character, and the lack of McCain's.”

TheBrizz replied on Oct 24, 2008 at 11:52:31

“The point is not that it's a huge deal that he met with Pinochet, the point is to highlight the hypocrisy in saying that Obama wants to meet with disctators without pre-conditions, and calling that naive and dangerous, when McCain himself has done exactly that before.

The level of blatant hypocrisy within the Republican party is amazing.”

“While McCain came out in opposition to Jim Webb's GI Bill, he simply didn't show up to vote. In fact he was only one of three senators not to cast a vote on this legislation. The others were Kennedy who was in the hospital and another senator who was attending a funeral. Unless he's cast a vote within the last week or so, McCain hasn't cast a vote since April 8th. He's supposed to represent AZ, but apparently someone forgot to tell him.”

Step up, SNL

Commented Sep 16, 2008 at 15:22:52 in Media

“I would agree that SNL is missing a great opportunity to lampoon the obvious misleading ads, slurs, and outright lies that seem to be pervasive during this campaign. I loved the Palin skit with Tina Fey in last week's show, but the show went downhill from there. Its amazing that Stewart can put together a great show night after night, but SNL has difficulty putting together a decent show once a week, and given the number of reruns, its really not even that often.”

“Romney would have been a much more formidable VP candidate. He appeals to the right with plenty of experience. I still think Romney will be the VP pick. Sarah Palin will be the Thomas Eagleton of 2008.

However, at this point the damage has been done. The Palin pick really points to the erratic behavior and decision making that is John McCain.”

LeftRight replied on Sep 02, 2008 at 11:32:21

“First, Romney isn't as strong as you think. The evangelicals wouldn't be more likely to vote for him now than they were earlier this year.

Second, Romney and McBush don't like each other. That's why he was out. McBush WANTED Lieberman, but there's no way that would work for the "base".”

Americatortures replied on Sep 02, 2008 at 05:52:14

“Really? How many Evangelicals will vote for a Mormon, which they view as a "Cultist Religion"?? McCain bowed to the "Agents of Intolerance" with the Palin selection,as Blumenthal wrote---and shows what a flip-flopper he is-once more!!!”
