Yes We Need Heath Care Reform, But Not to Look Like London

Commented Aug 30, 2009 at 17:28:20 in Politics

“Reading these comments, I think you may be too wrapped up stating the case for your goals to focus on the point she is making. The standaqrd of care sounds frightfully worse in NHS than is the case here for those of us who are insured and can fully utilize our health care system. I realize that does little for youif you can't afford health care but it would not be worthwhile reform or even politically realistic to embrace a solution that would cause the large number of insured Americans to have to put up with a substantially reduced standard of care than they now enjoy. Access has to be achieved, but if it is to be achieved by compromising quality, the insured and the elderly (who are covered by medicare) will oppose and defeat change.

Secondly, it is totally tautalogical that mistakes will be made by human beings in any system. But what Carol was describing was not a mistake- it was gross incompetence by an orthopedist in setting a broken leg by a specialist employed by NHS- not an accident or a mere mistake. As medical procedures go, that one must surely be pretty pedestrian.”

DocTwain replied on Sep 01, 2009 at 04:20:14

“You don't think gross incompetence exists in the US? American surgeons have even amputated the wrong leg. 100,000 Americans die or are injured every year from doctor or hospital error, including gross incompetence and negligence. It has been suggested that one cause of this large amount of error is that our doctors often are practicing medicine on inadequate sleep, a problem that doctors face much less often in the NHS.

The author has not actually proved anything. You are leaping to conclusions based on a complete lack of evidence, and some anecdotal fear-mongering by the author. I happen to think that single payer is preferable to the NHS, so I am not going to offer a general defense of the UK system, but I will say that you should actually learn something about the NHS and weigh a good deal of evidence before you start maligning it on the basis of a single anecdote by an author who offers nothing in the way of actual argument.”

“MLK, jr????? He's been dead for over 40 years. Give it up!”

eshalom replied on Aug 07, 2009 at 17:59:34

“wizened,

My point was that once MLK's philandering had been exposed, his wife remained faithful to him to the end, and she continued to perform as a great civil rights leader on her own. I never once heard anyone criticize her for remaining faithful to her husband, but Hillary Clinton has been repeatedly trashed here and elsewhere for preserving her marriage, keeping her family together, and succeeding as a U.S. Senator and lately as Secretary of State. Incidentally her job approval rating remains in the 70s.

But if you're concerned about timeliness, we could point out that Jesse Jackson fathered a child out of wedlock awhile back, and I seldom read or hear anyone criticize him or his wife.

RapidRay,

Your comment above says more about you than it does about Bill and Hillary Clinton who are widely recognized for their world leadership and outstanding public service.”

eshalom replied on Aug 07, 2009 at 14:55:33

Coretta Scott King died only a couple of years ago. She was the widow of MLK,Jr. I don't believe anyone ever criticized her for remaining faithful to her husband as did Hillary-haters.

Okay. I'm not posting anymore comments to this thread as it seems that Felsenthal is interested in pumping up the number of responses to her attack on Bill Clinton.”

“No surprise you can't mount a substantive criticism of the view, and simply resort to fatalistic quipping. Israel will not survive in its current configuration. The question is whether or not a Jewish Homeland can be preserved at all. If so, it will be because of the distinction I have put forward along with a single state secular democratic solution to the current conflict. Ethnic cleansing in Palestine simply will not stand, and that is a point on which the world has left you behind. That you don't see this simply betrays your myopia. And such myopia will destroy Israel as a Jewish homeland completely.”

“Wright is a very articulate man and an experienced speaker. I think he said what he meant and he meant what he said, and his efforts to back track now and "explain" sound more like the work of a politician than of one who claims to speak truth to power. I am not aware of the existence of a political movement known as "Imperial Zionism". I am aware of Zionism, the political struggle for establishment of a Jewish homeland in Israel. That movement came to fruition over 60 years ago. When you talk about opposition to Zionism, do you mean you are opposed to the Jews having a homeland they already have? If so, then anti-Zionist is certainly code for anti-Jewish, no matter how you may wish to mince your words.”

Sophist81 replied on Jun 12, 2009 at 05:43:37

“A Jewish homeland does not necessarily imply a Jewish state. Palestine may be recognized as a Jewish homeland, giving Jews special immigration rights, for example, without the establishment of a Jewish state that only pretends to be a democracy by excluding a significant number of the residents whose land it controls.

I use the term Imperial Zionism to distinguish from mere Zionism, which need not include a Jewish state, merely a Jewish homeland, in Palestine. To insist on the recognition of Palestine as a Jewish homeland is reasonable and supportable from my political perspective, that of a secular democrat, but to insist on the establishment/preservation of a Jewish state is wholly incompatible with the secular democratic ideals on which my country was founded. So I distinguish between mere Zionism and Imperial Zionism as a way of pointing out that Zionism may be compatible with secular democratic ideals, in spite of the obvious incompatibility of such ideals with the current state of Israel. And I do so because I support the idea of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, and don;t want that idea to be crushed along with the obvious injustice of te current state of Israel.”

Would Burris Have Sent Blago a Check? Probably, but Then Blago Got Arrested

Commented May 28, 2009 at 17:17:22 in Chicago

“I doubt anyone seriously thinks Burris will be indicted and I don't think that is what your blog is about Carol. The truth is the man appears to have negotiated to "buy" the Senate seat, he appears to have lied about his conduct to the Senate and to the public, he seems to value the seat as a prize rather than for any good that he might do with it and it is certain that the people of Illinois have been foisted with Burris as their unchosen "representative". And the entire matter has become stteped in racial politics and the needs of the Democratic Party. Honest government doesn't seem to stand a chance here. That is a tragedy.”

“I really don't understand how his comment can be defended. He is the Vice President speaking on national television. He shouldn't be a source of mass hysteria. He should think before he answers a question. So what if that is what he would tell his family. The really question he is being asked and answering is that of what should we tell our families. Most people don't have chauffeurs and private planes. They have to live in the real world. His answer was the functional equivalent of "Let them eat cake."
And the answer was likely as incompetent as it was insensitive. We have a Department of Health and Human Services and a Center for Disease Control. If they aren't telling people to change their lifestyles to that radical extent, the Vice President shouldn't be coming up with it on his own.”

He caused not panic other than from this blogger.”

“I couldn't disagree with you more. It is not for the ultra wealthy who will suffer no consequences from the imposition of a single payer system on those of us who can afford private health insurance to tell us what it is fair for the rest of us to have. These strident comments do not promote health care reform. It is unreasonable, indeed- fanciful, to expect insured Americans to buy into reform if it means the quality of their own health care will be affected adversely. The writer's blog is not a cheap ad hominum shot, it is a valid criticism of the substance of the remark.”

Also you won't believe this but 1 in 3 Senators are millionaires. Including Kennedy, Boxer, Rockefeller, Feinstein.. Plus 123 congressman. Besides government has never been able to run anything efficiently. Look at Social Security and Medicare, both are broke. From adding new people to the rolls but not taxing enough to cover it and they been raiding the fund to balance the budget under Clinton, Bush, Reagan. That made the deficits look smaller, when they weren't . We are in debt to a tune of $65,000,000,000,000.00.”

“I haven't read the Coates piece yet but I enjoyed the Felsenthal piece and learned a lot from it. It sounds from your review as if the Coates piece was focused largely on race, while the Felsenthal piece looked at Michelle Obama primarily as a wife, mother and a human being. The context of her piece was therefere destined to be far less provocative than Coates, and far more personal about Michelle.

I also think being from Chicago gives Felsental a leg up in understanding the context of Michelle's upbringing without a great deal of arm chair socialogy about the nature of Chicago that East Coast writers are fond of engaging in.”
