“While I think the EMT people should not do what they do if they are uncaring, I am not sure if they broke any laws by not doing anything to save the lady.

I think the Insurance Company doctors are far, far worse when it comes to neglect and regularly sending people to their deaths despite taking the Hippocratic Oath at some point.”

Dupree replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 14:10:48

“In my understanding of the law...they did broke the law which is why it led to their being suspended without pay. If one is a doctor, nurse or EMT you are held to a special classification and is expected to respond to emergency situations whether you are on the clock or not. This is my legal understanding of most laws. And if it were not so...I do not think their employer would have suspended them..after all they were on break...remember.

So, I maintain that if you are in that special classification under law ....you are required to respond to emergency situations.”

EST74 replied on Dec 23, 2009 at 17:46:03

“"A FDNY spokesman said all members take an oath to help others whenever emergency medical care is needed."

While not a Hippocratic Oath these EMTs also took an oath and it would seem they clearly failed to live up to said oath whether or not they broke any laws. How you could miss that obvious piece is pretty surprising.”

“A few years ago, my boyfriend slipped and fell on ice in a Brooklyn park. It was 14 degrees out that night and he had been walking his dog. He shattered his ankle. Thank God a good samaritan came along and called 911. The 2 EMTs arrived and didn't want to deal with him because of the dog. Naturally, the dog was upset over his owner laying on the ice unable to move. The EMT's were about to leave because of the dog. I guess we should have known what the rest of the night would be like. The good samaritan took the dog back to his apartment. The EMTS made my bf get in the ambulance himself, on a shattered ankle. Then one of them ripped his jeans to view the shattered ankle. She didn't use a scissor. She tried to tear denim with her bare hands, on a patient with a shattered bone, and in shock from laying on icy pavement for nearly an hour. To this day, he still can't talk about the inhumane treatment incurred at their hands. What I'm trying to say is that although I'm sure the majority of EMT's are fine people, this story does not shock me.”

“I guess the Smart Car is the most controversial choice here. If we are talking about the US implementation of this car only I actually agree with the author. If you read professional reviews (Car and Driver, etc) on the Smart Car you will find that the car has little cargo space, not that great gas usage while demanding premium fuel, and terrible transmissions. The only thing which the Smart Car exceeds its competitors at is to find parking because it's small. However, it's not small enough so that you will still need to use up one single parking space. It's competitors on the other hand (small sized cars) are mostly cheaper, offer more horse power, similar/better gas mileage, and more importantly offers additional space in the back.

In Europe I heard there are half parking spaces designed for Smart Cars and the gas usage is much much better than the US version. Given the fact that Europe is also a lot more crowded the Smart does make a lot of sense. In the US version of the car however was way overhyped.”

gabe1475 replied on Dec 23, 2009 at 14:56:32

“Actually the smart car is only a compromise if you need the second set of seats. For my lifestyle it is perfect my Wife has a Forester for the weekends when whe have the kids and I use the Smart for commuting, it was never meant as an only car as most would be suited better with a yaris or fit. I also wanted to point out that I got it for less with many more safety features (did better in crash tests than either micro car that would be a competitor) and as far as mileage you get quite a bit of a bump when not on the highway. The car is geared for optimal mileage at 40-50MPH. I am now getting 50MPG on a regular basis. The only US cars that get better mileage are the WV TDI or a hybrid which cost twice as much as the vehicle I purchased, not to mention they are not getting much more than what i currently get. Also premium fuel is recommended, this is only to pleas the US at a bit of boost in power, I don't need the extra power so I use regular and have no issues. The transmission is only rough if you drive the car sporty, and anyone who buys this car for sporty driving obviously did not test drive before buying.

“While I am sure Nike would of happily paid Tiger whatever the sum based on his sporting talents alone, I am doubtful that Accenture would of paid Tiger $30m/yr to be the face of the company in ads had Tiger lived his the typical playboy athlete lifestyle. Sure, Elin had it alot easier than other mothers who did not have maids and millions to help raise the kids, but let's be honest here: If Tiger were not married to someone and at least pretend to settle down he would of gotten less in endorsements. Most of Tigers net worth came from endorsements.

Now, the pre-nup still should determine the outcome but until now Elin did do her part to help shape Tiger's image which contributed significantly to Tiger's income.”

Copenhagen: China's Chance to Lead; Where is the United States?

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 09:46:23 in Green

“The US cannot move ahead in this because it's ultimately run by the big businesses and Wall St, with emphasis on short term profitability rather than long term well being. In the main time both the Democrats and the Republicans play the blame game (though it is mainly the Repubs who push for deregulation although its pretty obvious that the businesses themselves are incapable of self-monitoring). The Chinese government on the other hand has to improve its pollution problem or else the middle class will revolt.

The sad truth is that Americans are far more wasteful than anyone else on this planet. Sure China emits more pollution as a nation, but there are over 4 times more people living in China. It's little wonder the US government does not want to use the per capita measurements when it comes to the environment.”

Tiger Dumped Because He's Black?

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 15:25:18 in Sports

“First of all, I am not white or black. I am also not sure about the whole race argument when it comes to how Woods is getting treated. Jon Gosselin who has an appearance of an Asian male (though he is mixed like Woods) sold fantastic although Asian males are the by far the least represented race/gender combo in the US media. Even when they do appear anywhere they are generally associated with either kung fu or some toilet humor. The only reason why Jon Gosselin's covers sold well IMO is because a lot of people happen to follow his show and share some sort of bond with this dysfunctional family.

Tiger Woods on the other hand has been very private and aloof. While he is a lot more famous than the Gosselins I am not exactly sure too many housewives (the target audience of the tabloid mags) are into golf enough to care about him. Plus, it's not like that the tabolids can get much scoops on Tiger. The guy and his wife rarely ever talks to the media.”

It's rather unfortunate that I live in a condo with people living above, below, and next to me because then I couldn't really turn on the speakers too loud.

I am hardly an audiophile and the only reason why I bought B&W speakers was because one of my friend is into home theaters and he recommended these to me. Before this I have only bought what I thought were high end stuff from places like Bestbuy. Now I feel silly when I think about it.”

“Looking at the Detroit's high school graduation rates, with less than 1 in 4 students graduate from high school on the long run it's inevitable that Detroit will decline.

In the short term I don't think Detroit can do much. It had failed to attract many companies outside of the automobile industry. I think this is just another example where the local government caters too much to one single industry (the big 3) and thus created barriers for other industries to move in.”

China's Media "Openness" in East Turkestan

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 10:20:15 in World

“I had to think for a moment just what the heck is East Turkestan. I think people are more used to the name XinJiang?

In any case, uighur activists like to bring up the brawl in Shaoguan but I have yet to read anything from both the Chinese government or from the activists on the reasons behind this. Why are the hans this upset at the uighurs and vise versa? I do travel to China often (though not to xinjiang) and from what I know the Hans are upset that the uighurs receive special treatments from not only special affirmative action programs (such as the ability to have multiple kids, boosts to college acceptance, etc), but also special treatments from the police. While this is not the case in xinjiang, uighurs elsewhere in China have a reputation for being thieves and drug dealers. Why is this? Because when uighurs did not acquire this reputation until late 90s, before that they were known to be shrewd businessmen throughout China.

From an activist's point of view I guess it's necessary to avoid discussing items which can harm your cause to bring xinjiang independence, but without someone going into details to examine the true cause of racial tensions between china and its minority groups I don't think there will be any sound resolutions.”

mathme replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 10:01:14

“Yeah, that design actually serves a purpose-- not to mention they weigh something like 500lbs a piece. I felt sort of bad for speakers like the Nautilus being lumped in with the assspeakers and gimmicks. Oh well.

I mean, I can buy a driver from Parts Express and shove it in a box that will end up making some kind of sound-- but will it have a flat response? Will it avoid having box resonance or port noise? Probably not. I've had a lot of speakers with nifty looking designs -- bose 201s, 301s, 401s ( all the old wooden ones), 6.2s, etc. and they all made sound. I thought they were pretty okay, especially the 401s that i got for a really great price. Then I decided to try out some boring box speakers-- Paradigm Titan V.3s. Wow... what had I been inflicting on myself with that bose trash for so long? Seriously... when I bought the 301s, I could have had these titans. I immediately picked up a pair of used Mini Monitors and gave my 401s away. I have a pair of used polk tower speakers as the rear (I tried them in the front-- talk about cabinet noise... ugh...). I actually started buying CDs again because I could hear how bad MP3s are. Those paper drivers in my old speakers were so low-fi that details were lost... I can even hear the differences between amplifiers now.”

AT&T Beats Verizon But Gets Blamed For The iPhone's Flaws

Commented Dec 14, 2009 at 00:30:31 in Technology

“I am surprised that author cannot even find a single anonymous first party source to discuss this, and instead speculating with 3rd party sources who have their own reasons for voicing up.

A friend of mine is one of the mid level managers for AT&T infrastructure. When we recently had dinner I was told that even after all of these years, AT&T and Cingular network has yet to be successfully integrated. While this does not explain all of the bad things going for the iPhone reception, it does provide a much more likely reason why I get dropped calls often on the iPhone.

I would think alot of people know about this already. The author needs to think a bit more, for high level Apple Execs to admit that AT&T's network sucks means that it's pretty much public knowledge. The fact that the exec has yet to fired means that he is probably not lying to cover apple.”

MrVee replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 14:08:09

“Exactly xtiangodloki. Good points all. There isn't a problem with the iphone as phones go. When I was with AT&T, i had plenty of dropped calls on my non smart flip phone. I added my two kids to my plan, they got totally new phones and they had dropped calls day one, two and three. Again, not smart phones either. Inside a month I dropped AT&T and moved to Verizon. In a year, I had one call disappear. One.
AT&T spends more on advertising and bonuses than they do on infrastructure.
The latest stunt is to placate the public with some silly app that sends them information when a call is bad. WTF? See, this is what I was trying to explain to LauraD above. AT&T is pointing finger at the Iphone when the problem is much bigger than that. What about the customer that brought AT&T to the dance? The non-smart phone customer who drop just as many calls as any cell phone on their network? For non smart phone customers there is no app because they see the issue as an "iphone" issue and to them, their network is world class. NOT.”

I guess it's a letdown for some who hoped that Woods is somehow above the playboy athlete stereotype, oh well. Tiger's problem was that he should not have gotten marrid.

As for sponsorships, Michael Jordan was also notorious for cheating on his wife and acting arrogant/petty at times but Nike didn't drop him. At the end of the day, Tiger Woods is a golf legend. He made the sports popular for a whole generate of people. It's pretty much expected that celebrities mess around anyway. “I am not sure how swyping would be faster. At the end of the day you will still need to put your finger over the exact keys to form a word. The difference is that on the iPhone you would need to life up your finger and then tap the next key whereas with the swyping system you would only need to lift your finger up once per word. I don't think that would make much difference.

Of course, the video did leave out one of the most common ways people type on the iPhone, horizontally with two thumbs. That would be definitely faster than swyping with one finger.”
