“Rinehart is right. Being a great golfer is every bit as significant as creating polio vaccine, discovering the structure of the atom, developing integral calculus, composing a great symphony...the list goes on and on.”

“Yep. I'd even go one step further and say that if you say racist things over and over, you are a racist in practice, regardless of what you might believe or assert about yourself. Kinda like the person caught, gun in hand over a dead body, who says "but I'm not a killer!"”

“Fanned. Yes, there is personal r@cism, when a person actually has negative attitudes toward the group in question, but there is also such a thing as taking advantage of societal r@cism, which is pandering to the r@cist attitudes of others. When you take advantage of the privilege you have, to denigrate others, without feeling negative attitudes toward them yourself, you are as much of a r@cist as if you had those feelings and attitudes yourself.”

“It's been a long time, and the survivor has forgiven him. But I don't see how this makes his behavior acceptable. Neither does being a famous movie director. It's entirely appropriate to follow through on these charges. My only question, really, is what took so long?”

“I agree with Emmory 100%. It's time for a national television control policy that institutes strict laws and mandatory prison sentences for excessive television watching. Besides its known harmful effects, television is a known gateway medium...most movie-goers and computer game players start out on "TV" before moving on to the hard media.”

“The study Tashkin was commenting on was released last year, nor this June and was done with the cooperation of the Veterans Administration. It's the largest and most thorough study of its' kind with more that 8,000 participants who were all examined regularly by doctors involved in the study over a ten year period (I think, could be longer). Most studies you read involve less than 100 participants with the larger studies really just poll done by grad students and involve nothing more than questionaires with no actual examinations.
Sun exposure, I suppose you are saying pot smokers don't get outside much, would not effect the kinds of cancer this study refers to. Lung cancer, not mentioned in this article was included in the head and neck. It's a general area referred to by the study that includes the upper body.”

"Kidlessness" or, It's Not About the Children

Commented Aug 04, 2009 at 17:58:26 in Living

“Oh, bleah, Richard.

This road has been trod before. I guess those with no kids do sometimes feel that the need to make that side of the story known. Articles like this have a little bit of a "doth protest too much" quality about them, though, don't they?

Maybe I'll write a nice long article about why I don't ... I dunno...feel the need to trot off to Europe every year?”

AmyinTexas replied on Aug 05, 2009 at 01:31:15

“My thoughts exactly. I get to listen to my childless friends complain constantly. Frankly most of them need to get a life. Busy obsessing over their neighbors lawn-watering practices or whether they have a good tan. And actually TALKING ABOUT themselves ALL THE EFFING time. But better never say anything about how great it is to have kids or they see it as pressure....blah, blah, blah... Meanwhile they can sit there and talk about how gross, fat, mean and nasty becoming a mother makes you without even the slightest attempt to spare my feelings.”

“Tolerance for school bullying is just as enlightened as saying that of course husbands beat their wives, it's just part of being human, and that the woman who goes on a date should expect that she could be raped--after all, she got in a car with the guy.

To me, to dismiss school bullying by saying "get over it" and the like is just another form of ignorance and hate. We are talking about children here. Why should be tolerate or even implicitly celebrate (it builds character, right?) brutality by one child against another?”
