Help For Victims of Sexual Violence
Commented Sep 09, 2009 at 12:58:57 in Living
“Yes, I agree our society needs to make some changes.
At the same time, we need to have firm accountability for this kind of violence against women. Historically in our country AND today, men who perpetrate sexual violence often are not held accountable by a system that continues the victimization of women.
Also, we need to remember that while these rates of sexual violence are extremely high, we also need to remember that there are segments of our population that have even higher rates. I bring this up to mention the fact that solutions to address different communities are also of importance. For instance, the rates of sexual violence against Native women are the highest of any group of women. And, the solutions need to be addressed in the Federal responses that are so abhorrently lacking in the adequate protections of Native women in this country.”

“As a mental health nad substance abuse counselor, I have witnessed the devastation that sexual violence brings to individuals, families, and our society. Thank you Christina Ricci for keeping your eye on this problem and encouraging us to do the same. I would also like to add that, while we should be accepting of all families, no matter their composition or configuration, in many cases the brokeness of a family often makes those who may be vulnerable to victimization even more vulnerable. This is a huge societal problem. Therefore, we ought to be cautious about which family configurations we are willing to accept, e.g. age at marriage, stability of the parties, financial status, mental health and substance abuse histories, etc. We know what is likely to work and what is not in regard to relationships and families; there are no secrets to any of this. Furthrmore, we may want to think about returning to a cultural dissaproval of out-of-wedlock childbearing. Just as importantly, our government and our economy ought to be such that one of two parents can earn enough to support their entire family, leaving the other parent able to nurture and protect their children full-time. Our society should give family and childrearing in general the highest priority. Don't get me wrong, I am a progressive, but I realize some time-honored traditions have evolved for good reasons and have worked very well and should be embraced; for all of our sakes.”

No one has been calling it what it is. Thanks you for drawing that comparison of how President Obama is being treat. I am grateful we have the kind of leader we have through President Obama. I don't necessarily agree with everything he is doing but I support him whole heartedly. After 8 years of the Bush administration, complete with apparent imbecility and opportunism to steal from the American people, anything is better. However, President is not at that low standard. He is raising the bar of what we should be expecting from our public leadership. I am thankful for that. Finally, we will get back to government taking responsibility for the people.”

“For those who OPPOSE health care reform:
1) At what point do we as a country decide that private insurance companies have had long enough to rake in profits at the cost of human life?
2) Why does the United States rank so low with mortality rates and quality of health care if we are supposed to be the wealthiest nation?
3) What can we do to help people have immediate access to medical care that does not place large financial burdens on individuals and households?”

Taboo Alert: The Real -- And Most Disturbing -- News In the Olbermann-O'Reilly Feud

“People in the US are zombies. We don't engage in anything that requires us to hold anyone accountable. We tend to like things on a silver spoon and ask no questions. I've traveled in many countries. I am interested in knowing what is going on and check out the different news sources. It has been interesting to me to see/hear the difference in perspective and details that are delivered from these different news sources. I have often wondered why people in other countries have more information than regular US citizens. When we consider the kinds of "news" coverage we get, it is like a tabloid. I have found it surprising that we have little information about negotiations going on in Congress but we can sure get information about the Palin feuds.
We need media regulation. There needs to be standards set and clear distinction on what can be called news.”

The MSM is good for plane crashes, natural disasters and celebrity gossip- otherwise go to shows like Bill Moyers Journal and Comedy Central. Isn't astounding that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert do a better job of of delving into the hypocrisy than the empty suits reading their manicured "news" copy.”

A 7-Step Plan To Boost Your Low Thyroid And Metabolism
Commented Jul 31, 2009 at 00:26:42 in Home
“I was diagnosed because I was having very heavy vaginal bleeding. My doctor did several things to explore it . She was a family practice doctor and in the process of trying to figure out what was going on, identified a bunch of other symptoms that helped her to decide to check my thyroid. Then she started testing my hormones. I tested positive for hypoactive thyroid. She put me on Levothyroxine and monitored my levels closely to see how it would work out. She upped my does a few times in that 1st couple of years. Then whammy, all of a sudden, I got slammed back to the same place I was before taking medication. My body stopped accepting the Levothyroxine. I have since been on Synthroid. Seems to be working out but my doses get changed in spurts. I go a couple of years really good and then a couple of years really bad. The hardest part is dealing with the deep fatigues. It undermines my ability to stay on track with my exercise regimen. At those times, its all I can do to just show up for work and keep myself from falling into a depression too.”

“You obviously do not suffer with hypoactive thyroid or have avery mild case of it. Hypo-thryroidism can be very serious! Its not a simple thing of lazy people!
I have been dealing with hypoactive thyroid for about 25 years. I have periods where the medication gets off and I end up so deeply fatigued that anytime I sit down, I fall asleep. My doctor talks about how having my whole system slow down like this can do harm to my internal organs cause things are not running efficiently. I struggle with kidney disease, water retention, dry skin, emotional roller coasters and that deep fatigue from time to time.”

My Abortion: It's Time to Tell

“My husband had come home one day after hearing a young woman tell her story of what it was like trying to push her way through protestors in front of the Women's Health Clinic when she was making one of the hardest decisions of her life. He lamented about sad and difficult that was. I told him to call the director of the Women's Health Center and ask her what he could do to help. She was a friend of mine. Amazingly, he called her and ended up signing up to volunteer to escort women in and out of the clinic. He was trained to conduct safe and peaceful escorts. When protestors made threats to the safety and well being of clinic staff, he escorted them, conducted overnight security and even signed me up to take security shifts. It carried into our private lives. We started receiving phone calls at home about being baby killers. It was scary, and potentially dangerous to us all but he didn't stop. I didn't want him to.
Men should be involved in the work and so should everyone. The Women's Clinics need help from all of us to help protect the safety of vulnerable women making very difficult decisions. They need to not be bullied and scared into doing things not in their best interests. This is terrorism, homegrown in the name of "prolife."”

Why Aren't Democrats Supporting Obama?

“One huge problems Democrats have had for years is being consistent, working together and being supportive. This is no new situation, it will however, bring the Dems out of the clouds and back on their knees wondering what happened if they can't find some way to show a unified front.
Barack Obama as a President-elect has received such high levels of attention and scrutiny. The Dems don't need to be the ones to tear at him. They need to get some lessons in debate and how to work in unified team. Heaven help us we could be quickly back into Republican leadership in 4 short years. And then where will we be. I hope the arrogance in Congress can finds its way to humility and partnership!”
