This December, Get Happy

Posted: 12/02/11 11:25 AM ET

In 2008 I started the How Happy is column for The Huffington Post, where each week I gave tips to help readers have a happier life. We then did a weekly series of video's called Ask Sophie where people could come on line to ask their personal questions. As a result of our work together the How Happy is books were born and it is really exciting to finally see them in print after putting so much thought and time into them.

That's why The Huffington Post is dedicating space this December to my new book series called How Happy is. Officially on sale this month, the series kicks off with four books focusing on your love life, marriage, health and home. Each book has 50 actionable happiness-boosting tips that are easy to implement, with a fun and revealing quiz at the beginning that will really help you to get to the heart of the matter and direct you to the tips that are going to benefit you the most.

My personal happiness journey began at a very young age, when I struggled to heal from a sports injury. I hurt my back while playing competitive tennis at 14 and went to a host of medical doctors who could not help, so took my healing in to my own hands and spent the next number of years participating and training in many different mind, body and spirit therapies and disciplines, believing as I always have in their intertwining influence. Over time, not only did my back heal, but I also became happier and consequently felt that the injury had become the catalyst for identifying my life's purpose, which was to help others find happiness in their lives as I had. I am an expert in human behavior and communication skills, as well as a Master Practitioner and Trainer in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a Feng Shui practitioner and a qualified Yoga Instructor. And now I have written these 4 How Happy is books to make it easier than ever to create a happier and healthier life.

Every Monday we will feature an abbreviated quiz, followed by exclusive tips from the books Tuesday through Friday. We'll be featuring "How Happy Is Your Love Life?" Starting December 5, "How Happy Is Your Marriage?" Starting December 12, "How Happy Is Your Health?"Starting December 19 and "How Happy Is Your Home?" Starting December 26.

I hope you'll join me this month as we celebrate happiness, one tip at a time. Because no matter how happy we might think we are, there is always room to be happier.

A couple years ago I was homeless...I spent 3 Christmas's in a row in jail committing stupid petty crimes to get myself arrested and taken off the street so I wouldn't freeze to death sleeping outside in the snow. I have completely changed my life around. I went back to school, I exercise, I am reuniting and gaining trust back from old friends and family, I am back to doing the activitvies I once upon a time loved when I was younger. I keep a positive attitude, I am not cured from my demons but for two years now I am well and I can be a decent member of society and a loving family member. This is going to be my second holiday season in a row replacing horrible memories with positive ones. Life is good. We live in America. The best things in life are FREE. I see no reason to stew in negativity...its a waste of energy.

How can I get happier if I am not happy at all? - Makes no since to me what so ever! - I am stuck in believing in the high all mighty dollar because it claims to be - It states 'In God we trust' - I am unemployed, unrecoverable from taxes & credit cards, no reliable transportation, 61 yrs old, divorced, mother with dementia, dysfunctional immediate family, two kids who think of me as a dad only when needed(no thanks to their mother) - Can't trust a priest or go for psychological counseling without putting up $50(money needed for utilities/food/housing) - High blood pressure, prostate, over weight & permanent lower back injury - When you think about it, in reality, only the high all mighty can resolve my situation - No, there is no really good answer for this - There is nothing that can be said to remedy this & if you think you can, I can not believe it - If you can, it will be either a miracle or it will be just an answer to satisfy your ego - This or this blog will be deleted - To make a long story short, some lives are meant to be miserable thru out life like day & night - I think you will eventually see me in the U S streets or in Africa, India playing my role of the 'Ying & Yang'

If you're waiting on God to help you, you're going to be waiting a while. Happiness does not come easy for everyone; and all people have to work on it sometimes. Looks like life's given you the short end of the stick. You can't control every situation, but you can control how you react to it. Pick one thing that's contibuting to unhappiness in your life and try to change it. I'd start with the over weight...not only will a better diet help your high blood pressure, it will also release the right chemicals to regulate your mood. Life's too short to spend any significant amount of it unhappy.

Sorry you are not happy right now. I want to say to you that you can channel the negative energy into something positive no matter how bad your temporary situation is. Wherever you draw your strength. Please understand that I am not trying to preach to you or even keep you from being unhappy if that is what you want. I dont believe that you want to be unhappy though.

I'd say write an article about loving winter. So many people complain but I love the season. Very serene and beautiful outside in a haunting dormant kind of way.

The pursuit of happiness is the children's version of the pursuit of contentment.

An alternative apparently Biblical perspective appears to suggest that the ultimate in happiness is found in restoring the damaged intimate relationship with and sovereign leadership of God. The theory appears to be worth mentioning. :)
