Since May 2007, Stacy Sullivan has been Counterterrorism Advisor at Human Rights Watch, where she works closely with the Terrorism and Counterterrorism Program to spur public discourse on unlawful detention, rendition, torture, and other human rights abuses that have become widespread and hotly contested since September 11, 2001.

Before joining Human Rights Watch, she was a journalist. She covered the war in Bosnia for Newsweek, and later worked as an editor on the magazine’s international edition. She is the author of Be Not Afraid, for You Have Sons in America, a narrative non-fiction book about the war in Kosovo told through an Albanian émigré to the United States who, from his Brooklyn-based roofing company, spearheaded a $30-million fundraising effort to launch a guerrilla army in the Balkans.

Her articles on a range of human rights issues have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, The New Republic, Men’s Journal, and the op-ed pages of The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post.

She has a BA in political science and German literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
