Copenhagen was a Failure of Democracy

Posted December 23, 2009 | 04:26 PM (EST)

It's difficult to pinpoint what went wrong in Copenhagen. It was, of course, the politics - the U.S. and China petrified about giving away economic superiority to the other; developing nations crying foul at the developed nations' pledges for more money - remembering the same empty words that came after...

America Needs an NHS

A lot of hoo-ha has been kicked up in Britain this week about the Right's use of some UK politicians' quotations, taken out of context, to be used in advertising campaigns against President Obama's health care plan.

Britain's National Health Service provides universal health care to every British citizen. No...

The Prince's Rainforest Project on this World Environment Day

1 Comments | Posted June 4, 2009 | 11:50 AM (EST)

It's difficult, sometimes, to wade through the many thousands of different campaigns and initiatives that, for all their success and good intent, clutter up the business of trying to get a real change in global environmental policy. This World Environment Day, however, I have been drawn to the Prince of...

Finally, a President Who Knows How to Say "My Bad"

Posted February 4, 2009 | 03:44 PM (EST)

You know -- I could get used to this whole 'change' thing that's going on around Washington. It's sort of refreshing and pleasant.

It's amazing that after eight years of Bush, you forget that a lot of politicians don't try to create that aura of faux perfection, and actually...

Don't Go Spoiling My Holiday Cheer!

Posted December 19, 2008 | 01:58 PM (EST)

OK - so everyone's a bit down at the moment. Stock markets crashing. Unemployment rising. Politicians getting arrested. So, for me at least, a little escapism in the form of a light-hearted rom-com is an enjoyable way of letting go. Perhaps tuck into The Holiday, Love Actually, Sex and the...

Barack Obama Needs to Stop Exxon, Before They Kill Us All

Posted November 4, 2008 | 04:53 PM (EST)

Just as I think Barack Obama might, just might, be able to lead us out of the environmental hell-hole that we have been led into by the Bush Administration, I forget about what he's up against.

What really horrifies me about ExxonMobil's record-breaking profits this quarter is not how big...

New Economic Dawn -- New Environmental One?

Posted September 22, 2008 | 03:43 PM (EST)

Impossible as it is to miss the goings on of late on Wall Street and abroad, I still feel just a little bit optimistic about the future.

I realize that stock prices don't bring social change, but they can change attitudes -- as aptly demonstrated by the collapse of Lehman...

Farewell to a Child of the American Dream: Goodbye Tubbs Jones

Posted August 21, 2008 | 12:17 AM (EST)

Words cannot describe the absolute shock that ran through me when I had heard of Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones' aneurysm on Tuesday. Her death is a truly insurmountable blow to this country and its people, and to the people of Cleveland, Ohio, who for ten years were nobly represented...

Move Aside George & Gordon - The New Kids Are On The Block

With Barack Obama concluding his Middle-Eastern and European tour today, it got me thinking about just how much I really want to get rid of the status quo and get started on the 'change'.

Obama stopped by at 10 Downing Street to visit Gordon Brown - with whom he most...

Let's Follow Richard Branson's Green Example

Posted July 4, 2008 | 08:22 PM (EST)

Richard Branson announced, Tuesday, that he would be investing in Mosquito Island, the neighbour to Necker Island, his pad in the British Virgin Islands.

I myself have been to the BVIs a number of times and so, equipped with some local knowledge, was therefore more than a bit concerned with...

Can Barack Obama Really Stop The Climate Crisis ... Finally?

Posted June 5, 2008 | 04:27 PM (EST)

Through all the excitement about nominees, and superdelegates, and Clinton (who, by the way, I had thrown my lot in for, but there we go) not conceding until she had to be pushed out the door rather than leave gently (I would expect nothing less!), there has been something grating...

Yves Saint Laurent -- A Remarkable Legacy

Posted June 1, 2008 | 07:36 PM (EST)

I was incredibly saddened by the news of the death of legendary and iconic fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, who died Sunday evening at his home in Paris.

His work, which was worn by some of the most influential and beautiful (I don't suggest those two descriptors are exclusive from...

Lieberman-Warner bill: Why We Need It, Why It's Doomed

Posted June 1, 2008 | 06:06 PM (EST)

On Monday, the Senate will debate the Lieberman-Warner bill, surprisingly bold legislation from the two senators which, if passed, would be 'one giant leap for mankind' towards stopping our addiction to carbon-based fuel supplies and placing a price on carbon.

The bill, which would cap greenhouse gas emissions by...

It is nice to know that, in this climate of financial change -- where markets are tumbling, shares are crumbling, and currencies are stumbling -- some things carry on as they always have done.

Well, I say "nice."

The annual meeting of shareholders of Exxon Mobil occurred Wednesday,...
