Drudge Plays the Race Card

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

In the New York Times, Adam Nagourney identifies "race" as one of the six factors that could prevent the election of Barack Obama. The others, as paraphrased by Mark Halperin, are "(1) not everyone who has recently registered as a Democrat may vote on Election Day; (2) the Democrats' improved voter turnout effort may still not work as effectively as the Republicans' effort, (3) the race may swing back to McCain under the "pendulum theory," and (4) a national security event in the closing days could "shuffle the deck of cards," and (5) the Ayers attack could end up sticking."

Matt Drudge appears to have decided which horse he is going to ride. All day, the Drudge Report, which has been more one-sided than usual recently (lots of Bill Ayers, little Troopergate), has featured this picture of Barack Obama (presumably) campaigning in Ohio.

Well, it worked on Harold Ford.

This jumped out at me immediately once I saw it Monday morning. It's still there, and has been on Drudge for at least 16 hours today.

If you follow through to the article that Drudge is pointing to, you'll see that this particular picture is just one of a large set of photographs of Obama going house to house. It was very obviously singled out to present a certain message to a certain type of individual.

I saw this pic this morning and found it to be a pretty blatant lob at any fearful undecideds. Cheap.

I refuse to go to Drudge anymore. Since Palin was picked (Matt's little girlfriend) his bias in favor of her has been extreme. He stubbornly avoids putting up any negative headlines about Palin. I think at this point, it is fair to say, that he is militant in his support of the McPalin ticket. Drudge, like the McPalin camp, is showing his desperation.

I'm sorry. People are just going to have to start getting used to the idea that black people and white people sometimes kiss each other on the cheek. They also say hi, shake hands, become best friends, become lovers, get married, have children and live happily ever after together. I hate to be the bearer of good news, but there it is.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! *sarcasm*

Seriously though you are right on. That "bad news" you are talking about has produced a wonderfully beautiful nephew for me.

Drudge is a republican wrapped in what he thinks is bi-part clothes. He has been slanted at best and full on rpeublican at worst. He likes to htink of himself of one who "exposes" the truth but he often makes up the story as he goes along. As with this picture the woman looks happy enough and Obama obliged her with a kiss on the cheek for whatever reason he was nnocent but the point to the picture and who took it might be not as nice a motive. As we all know it is in the eye and lies of the beholder and Drudge isn't a very nice guy ever. This is too late as Obama has had pictures of kissing all kinds of people and many are not black. WHip this into what they can it still is past when this might have worked as a turn off because the GOP ticket has done the fear as the terrorist card and not the white woman one.

No one can turn this into an Issue ...

Obama is that friendly ..

Remember after the Biden speech at the Dem convention with his appearance he kissed Mrs. Biden on the cheek and no one made that into an issue because it is NOT ...

i showed my 18 year old the drudge page saying to him "look what drudge is up to now" and he had absolutely no idea what i was talking about.
when i pointed out the picture to him he just looked and said "so?" for the first time i was so proud of my generation. we may have failed in so many things - in letting our country get involve in another military quagmire even though we lived through the hard lessons of vietnam and now bringing our nation to the brink of financial collapse.
but at least we taught our children to live Dr. King's dream.
let drudge play his race card - his game will soon be over.

I was going to write something specific to this story out of my own experience, but your comment said it all. The clueless are a dying breed.

Sadly, teenagers aren't known for turning up at the polls. Horrid old racists, on the other hand, are. I know exactly what Drudge means to convey with that photo, and it's loathsome.

Here's the story from the kissee, Rev. Angela Zinmann, on the Clergy for Obama website:
http://clergy4obama.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/listening-listening-listening/
As she says, "When I arrived on the scene, tripping up the cracked sidewalk in front of the low-slung ranch homes and introduced myself as the precinct captain, he said 'I have to give you a kiss for that!' - and so he did."

This is not the only example. I could not help but notice their extensive coverage of the OJ trial complete with pictures on a daily basis. Oprah was there so regularly I wondered whether I was on the Ebony website by mistake. The funny thing about this kind of stuff is that it works on people who do not know they are being worked on. When you understand the game, it can appear a bit crude and is very telling about those who employ it.

Lucky woman! I would love to have my picture taken with Senator Obama kissing me on the cheek. I'd have it blown up to poster size and give it as Christmas gifts to every person I know! She looks like she's having a ball and he's just...giving a supporter a photograph. I see nothing racial about it! Lucky lucky lady!

I saw this on Drudge and had a similar reaction, so I clicked on the links to the story Drudge associated with the picture and sure enough there was a different picture there. Drudge used that picture on purpose. You and I may see nothing wrong with that picture, but Drudge knows his base and how they might view it and that's why he picked that particular pic. I'm not saying Matt Drudge is racist, but I am saying he is trying to reach out to them and scare them about Obama.

Drudge is actually a master at appearing non-partisan, while smearing Democrats and the left. He does it mainly through two methods:
1) Selectively posting headlines. i.e. he only posts those articles unfavorable to Democrats or favorable to Republicans. He occasionally throws in an objective piece to maintain his non-partisan cred.
2) Using clever phrasing and even italics to indicate his own incredulity, especially about Democrats.

But at the same time, since he posts no opinions of his own, he is seen as impartial. He is not. If you see a headline on his website, it's virtually guaranteed that it will appear on FOX News later that night.

Read his site, but be skeptical.

Unfortunately, when I first saw this picture a few days ago I *knew* it would be used against Obama. It had *sick opportunism* written all over it. Ugh.

I have always considered Drudge to be partisan and opportunistic. He knows how this picture will feed into some white males' phobias and how it will get more views for his site. Hopefully fewer than he thinks...

Total agreement in those points, bpress. The minute someone quotes Drudge as a 'source' for whatever pap they're spewing, it gets an immediate dismissal from me (with hysterical laughter to emphasise my point). D.R. is on a par with those "Bat-Boy from Outer Space" trash tabloids..! ;) ...

Have you ever looked at the Drudge Report? (Before you start laughing next time, you might want to inform yourself a little better.)

It's a compendium of articles from News sites from around the world. He is as reliable and reputable as those sites (which quite often include the New York Times). There is very little (outside of the headline) that Drudge actually contributes.

I find it amusing, that you accuse him of running an overly biased site, and yet here you are on the HuffingtonPost.
