Karl Rove is back. The latest maneuvers of the Bush Administration have the sinister, if now wacky, imprint of Rovian strategizing all over them. For example, the troop surge in Iraq -- hey, we'll put the Democrats on the defensive -- for real -- this time, make them look unpatriotic for opposing "winning the war" against terrorism, show that they are really out of step with the American people, and by the way "surge" in the polls. But what -- you tried that tactic in the 2006 Congressional elections and it didn't work? Not to worry because this time George W. Bush will go on national TV and explain in his most Godly manner that he has America's destiny on his side, and that, of course, always impresses the voters. As for domestic issues, let's put the Democrats up against the wall by calling for cutting back social programs and balancing the budget. What -- you say Bush has run up the greatest deficits in US history and he has the chuztpha to demand austerity? No problem -- a little jujitso with the facts always works (you know, the voters ain't that smart) and we're back in the ballgame. Hey, Karl, can't wait for your other strategems. The next two years will be a hoot!
