HST and JFK=George W. Bush?

Why is George W. Bush allowed to get away with citing the names of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman in support of his policies in Iraq? Last Thursday, the president said at a GOP fundraiser in Alabama: "The party of FDR and the party of Harry Truman has become the party of cut and run." How many ironies abound. Neither of these great American leaders ever would have even considered taking a pre-emptive attacks on a small country that did not threaten our national security. FDR made clear what he thought about preemptive military action after the Japanese dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor, calling the surprise assault a "day of infamy." And he did not conduct his foreign policy unilaterally. He worked with a large group of allies to win the second World War. Thereafter he and Truman constructed international institutions to help bring peace to the world and reorder international relations under a framework of global rules: e.g., the IMF, World Bank, UN, NATO, etc. Finally Truman himself fought his military battles under international law -- most prominently, the Korean War which was done under the umbrella of the UN. These men stood in total opposition to the way Bush conducts foreign policy. George W. Bush's attempt to hijack the reputations of these two men to back up his catastrophic blunders in Iraq is evidence of an administration in its death throes.
