Corruption Watchdogs Have a Hot New Blogger: Jack Abramoff

Posted: 02/ 3/2012 1:09 pm

Holy Indian reservation roulette wheels Batman!

The newly launched Republic Report, an anti-corruption blog focusing on how self-interested dollars are warping the public-interest responsibilities of America's democratic institutions, has actually hired convicted felon Jack Abramoff to be one of its lead bloggers.

Yes, that Jack Abramoff, "Casino Jack," as profiled in the Alex Gibney film, Casino Jack and the United States of Money.

The Republic Report may be "pulling a Joe Kennedy" here -- and I think it's provocative, bold and will attract a huge heaping pile of hate mail -- but nonetheless brings in DC's version of The Fantastic Mr. Fox to tell the world how the system works and what to watch out for.

This is what Franklin Roosevelt had in mind when he hired Joseph Kennedy Sr., a known stock manipulator and inside trader, to serve as the inaugural chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.  Roosevelt wanted to catch the crooks on Wall Street, and said to a person asking why he had appointed a crook to be the watch dog, "Takes one to catch one."

And to the naysayers out there, it's probably better for Abramoff to be writing out about how DC-style corruption works so as to help those unfamiliar with the nuts and bolts of 'how to make a Senator smile' do a better job reforming the system rather than getting Ambramoff back out there advising the bad guys how to cash in on the system.

The other bloggers in the group are outstanding and have, for the most part, crystal clear clean progressive track records -- including former Think Progress writer Lee Fang, former Center for American Progress youth and college program activist David Halperin, also another former Think Progress correspondent Zaid Jilani, former Foreign Policy and The Atlantic staffer Suzanne Merkelson, tough-minded investigator for the conservative Senator Charles Grassley Paul Thacker -- and one of the undisputed early leaders of modern grassroots, digital political activism, Matt Stoller.

Thacker the exception -- the rest are real progressives and none have done felony convicted jail time.  Bringing Abramoff into this mix is one really interesting way for this blog to distinguish itself in a very crowded marketplace.

Nick Penniman, the well known former TomPaine.com editor and former lead of The Huffington Post's investigative unit is the president of United Republic, which has launched the blog.

I really want to go to the holiday party these folks throw and see if Stoller and Abramoff can do a buddy to buddy thing under the mistletoe -- and unite in their common work highlighting the corruption of America's key democratic platforms.

Abramoff's first post has gone up -- and in it he offers a Joe Kennedy-esque rationale for why he's doing this with a bit of confession:

It is a privilege for me to add my insights and experience to their strong and sagacious team and I look forward to working with them to reveal to our nation the way Washington really works.

There is a rising tide of outrage in our land about the abuse in our system. Sadly, in my former life as a lobbyist, I participated in this dysfunctional and byzantine world. But now, in these pages, and with my other efforts, I intend to do what I can as we all attempt to repair our democracy.

Interesting move by Nick Penniman and his team.  We really look forward to following the entire line up there, but also to the next and next next contributions by Jack Abramoff.

Abramoff is getting hush money from his friends. His family was probably collecting it too during the 43 months he was in jail.

Who came to then House Speaker Gingrich and demanded that he resign or be voted out? You know, the ones Gingrich called cannibals, besides then House Majority Whip Tom DeLay which now has no more indemnity.

John Boehner of Ohio, then Republican leadership chairman Bill Paxon of New York and House Majority Leader Dick Armey, currently of Freedom Works.

These people have a lot to lose if Abramoff talked.

Abramoff had a lot of time to contemplate his life & the world in which he lives. It's meaningful what being locked up in a cage can do for some folks who otherwise might never have learned what they did to make more substantive contributions to the world around them.

We can learn a lot from Jack Abramoff because he knows what he is talking about and nothing is more important than this. Unfortunately a majority of people in both corrupt parties do not seem as concerned about this problem as they should be and we know that the mainstream media has a history of ignoring it. As long as the corrupt congress and even the presidency are up for sale to the highest bidder we cannot expect to solve our problems and the rhetoric of politicians means absolutely nothing.

I saw Jack on CSPAN promoting his book. I do believe that he is truly sorry for what he did on behalf of his former clients and that his desire to make amends is serious. He deserves his shot at redemption.

Jack made his fortune in lobbying for Indian Gaming, it's not racist, just a fact. I'd be curious as to how the tribes feel about his release and book deal.

It's amazing how White males convicted felons get a second chances but average minority ex-offenders cannot work in Mickey D's. Both Jack Abramoff and Eliot Spitzer has been on Up w/Chris Hayes to sell books and offer opinion. Eliot Spitzer will be hosting on Current tee vee and now Jack Abramoff is hired to be a blogger. Yet many will argue there is no double standard or racism in America. This is stain on America that certain Americans keep alive and throbbing. What a pity.

I don't think it has much to do with race, they both were celebrities before too.
Elliot Spitzer was not convicted for anything. I wish he would have stayed AG he knew so much about Wall Street that possibly he could have done something about the CDO-s and the mortgage crisis.
And Abramoff can do a lot of good things, because he knows the system.

It has everything to do with race but folks like you never wish to see that , no matter how much proof is laid before you.Eliot Spitzer was not convicted because he was given a choice RESIGN as Governor of NYS or be Arrested and charged, that's why he was not arrested. Facts do matter, you cannot be a lawmaker, while breaking the law.

I don't see bank robbers being interviewed on bank safety, or rapist giving out rape preventive advice There is a serious double standard when it comes to who gets a second chance and who does not. Both Spitzer and Abramoff were rich and still are rich, why help them sell books and redeem themselves. But then again race and class does matter.

He was not facing prison nor was that ever a threat. Why is it impossible for some folks to stop pointing fingers at others, especially when they're wrong.

If Newt can be redeemed, more power to Jack. "It takes one to catch one" is true and there are people on K street who won't be getting a lot of sleep anymore.

This is good. And I do think Jack is really trying to make amends. I also thinks he's like to reap a little vengeance on those that locked him up, and those that threw him away. Whatever works, as long as the mess is cleaned up.

I say to Mr.Abramhoff, spll your guts. You made a good start in your book, follow up with more on what is going on NOW. Mr. Josh Fox was ousted from a mock hearing, whose panel consisted of oil company lobbyists masquerading as witnesses about the dangers of fracking. It was an embarrassing moment for our Cogress and to the rule of law. It is a sad day in America, when our Congressmen blatantly expose themselves by covering up!

More power to him if he is truly wanting to do something FOR the country. But I hope he's careful. I would hate to hear of him committing suicide by shooting himself in the back thirteen times. With a dozen witnesses swearing the man in the mercenary suit was just picking up litter when he took the gun stuck it in a holster he just happened to be wearing. And with the supreme court backing up the findings.

The Supreme court does not investigate crimes, and the scene you describe is rather gruesome isn't? You don't mean to reply imply, do you that that might be something you woul sanction, eh?

Just like they use reformed burglars for safety stuff a reformed lobbyist can help a lot more than somebody without that knowledge.

Well, we certainly see how sitting in self-righteous judgment has worked out--we're in deeper do-do than ever. So I say let's listen to whomever might have something worthwhile to say however much we think that ex-cons are evil throughout and deserve only to be cowering in the corner with shame. 'Course, the fact that Abramoff was caught when everyone else seems to get away with it may mean his advice might not be worth a whole lot
