So, as you probably know I've been a big fan of the changes happening in the city. I think that the shift from cars to mixed use streets with larger side walks, protected bike lanes, and open space is a great thing.
But, this one has me totally stumped.
Red? Really? What does it mean? I know that green is for bikes. And the grey gravely stuff means chairs and tables. But RED?
Some one tell me what I'm missing here? I'm doing my best to keep up with all the changes in streets, pedestrians, bikes and such. But this one has me stumped.

The red paint must be either:
Showing solidarity with the Iranian people
OR
Allusion to Times Square's former history as a red light district
