Ladies, what happens when you take your nail polish off and see your toenails turning yellow, getting chalky, flakey and thick with whitish markings on the nail plate? Is that an "OMG" moment?

Nail fungus is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, nail fungus may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and crumble at the edge. It can affect several nails but usually not all of them.

Sometimes the nail may separate from the nail bed and become detached. When they get thick you may feel some discomfort in the toenails because they can rub against the top of the toe box or the tip of your shoe. Nail fungus lives in the environment and can be found in warm dark moist environments such as locker rooms at gyms, public showers, swimming pools and inside shoes. Those of you who go to nail salons to get pedicures, make sure they sterilize their instruments and disinfect the foot baths they use to soak your feet. When you're at the gym wear shower sandals in the locker room and while taking showers.

It can be treated topically using a variety of remedies and medications as well as orally. Consult your dermatologist or podiatrist if you have noticed any of the visual signs and characteristics on your toenails. The longer you have nail fungus the more difficult it is to treat. Early detection will help you affectively treat and eliminate this problem.

So be aggressive when treating nail fungus and walk happily ever after in open-toed shoes or sandals.
