So there it stands: a naked, pigeon-chested old man, random strands of white hair on its boney shoulders; its swollen-knuckled hands clasped over its dead genitals, looking at once forlorn and menacing, shivering with self-loathing and xenophobia, raging pathetically at its timely and appropriate defeat at the hands of Reason.
Ladies and gentlemen: The Republican Party.
With every passing day, the people who stubbornly, maddeningly cling to an obsolete ideal and who stand in the way of the cultural advancement of this country, this America, spew the base reality of their caustic ideology into the air.
The Republican Party is like a dying tyrant, mad with syphilis, ironically like that very Stalin they would accuse their enemies of associating with. How else to account for their desperation to resurrect the wraith of Joseph McCarthy; the hammy and baffling utterances from high level party officials like Boehner and McConnell; the blatant desire on their part to let the country fail out of sheer resentment; the wanton sedition of Conservative shit-stirrers ranging from the quasi Madame Defarge Michele Bachmann to the porcine, pill-popping porcine propagandist Rush Limbaugh?
It is an all out assault on reason, on progress, on truth. What is the difference between the Republican Party and, say, the Taliban? A rogue by any other name would smell as rank. Their frantic accusations all churned out in a futile effort to explain their current pariah status is as pathetic and draconian as stoning a woman in the street.
I feel I must apologize for my own particularly febrile anger. It's unseemly and ugly. But finally, the enemy is clearly outlined. We can see it for what it is and what it always has been. It exists not in myth but in a reality which has plagued humanity for millennia: utter, hateful ignorance born from a fear of truth, indeed a fear of life itself; a mad and impotent pursuit of some long-forgotten ecstasy having spawned generations of paranoid power addicts who chase the past at the expense of the future, cloaking their real intentions in perfumed patriotism and the seductive swoon of religion.
It's so fitting that we are living in an age where beheadings, torture, piracy and now unbridled power mongering are all common place. Perhaps that element of humanity is going back into hibernation and is snapping at any and everything before its eyes finally close. In our lifetime the choice has never been so stark.
Don't be intimidated by that naked, pigeon-chested old man. His party's over.

As a lifelong Independent I find the major parties slugfest quite entertaining. I remember years back when the same death song was being sung over the Democratic Party. Now, I am hearing the same tune in reverse. Sorry Dems. It is just singing into the wind. The Republicans will eventually rebound and you will be back to square one. But, at least you and the Rebublicans have a song that hits the top of the charts from time to time. We Independents are just spectators.
The only time that I can recall from readings which would qualify is around the turn of the last century when Bryan headed the party. Speaking as an ideologue, I believe Bryan was closer to the "right" ideals, i.e. what's appropriate for a nation moving in the right direction. The current GOP, however, are not. They're trapped in the old, backward-reaching. Most developed countries tend toward a certain system, and the GOP ideals are not it.
Hopefully, this is the end of the GOP, but their policies will die. Eventually.
Steven, as do we all, welcome the return of sanity to the populace. We care not a whit that the Republican Party is gone, it is the values under their leadership these last 28 years or so, whose departure we celebrate. The credit card lifestyle (Bush never once vetoed a bill), the wild spending that drove the treasury into bankruptcy, the constant need to war with someone, etc. it is those things we hope to never see again. If the Republican Party does redefine itself and starts to represent ALL of America, then perhaps we will welcome them back. For the foreseeable future, no one I know wants the hate-mongering, pitting countryman against countryman Party that it was.
Concur. Ours is a system of conflict designed to keep a single political party from promoting it's own agenda for too long. Most of the time it works, other times it doesn't.
The GOP. Over one hundred years of tradition, not impeded by progress.
Considering the number of terms held by Rs in the past handful of decades, is wise to not get ahead of ones self.
A lot can go wrong in nine months, ask Bush, even more in four years.
We are deep in the woods and their is no light.
That may be so, the major difference is "intent".
"Rethuglicans" act of revenge and a selfish, naked pursuit of power. That is the truly disgusting and unpatriotic difference.
The "age of enlightment" never seeped into the GOP.
Not sure you meant to use the adjective "porcine" twice in your description of Limbaugh, but you certainly captured the spirit of the modern GOP.
It's a party that's all about fear, ignorance, hatred and selfishness.
WOW Steven...j sut plain ole' WOW! I wish I had your imagry, pure poetry but I certainly share your anger, frustration, disgust and outrage of this party called Republican. I swear I think they should be arrested for such remarks they make; its borderline sick and mostly dangerous. They are such failures as stateman and lawmakers. How could anybody befriend such a group and go with their no ideas, lack of creativity, their vindictiveness, and cold hearted politics. They are not leaders, they are groping and you pictured them and framed them perfectly. They need prayers... they are way over the top in their words and deeds. I am so sorry that they are the only other party Americans can choose at election time for they certainkly do not deserve the honor of a job representing us. They are defunct. We need a viable thrid arty candidate to arise and soon. I am not for a one party system, but that is the only thing we have at this time. The Republicans collectively are lost, dangerous and down right scary...th at includes their enabling pundits, Limbaughs, Hannity, Beck and the Palin's and Joe the Plumbers.. .they reduce us...all of them and I have no respect for any of them save a few who distance themselves from these sick, tyrannical ideolouges who are outdated and for me, defunct. Tyranny and Treason is the Republican party's axis of evil called strategy?
Rest in pieces. Not sorry to see you go.
"Rest in Pieces". (Good)
kylenn.... good line. bwahahahahahaha
Well, shut my mouth. That was stupendous! I couldn't have said it better. REST IN PEACE G.O.P. :)
Can we really dare to hope they're on their last leg? Oh, please, please, please. It's like a mental disorder.. . and they are absolutely convinced (at least the foot soldiers) that WE are the crazy ones. It's a mad, mad world...
Great piece of writing.
Oh come on. There's nothing wrong with the Republican party that a day of unbridled, national teabagging won't fix.
p.s. -- be sure not to tell them what that means. won't they be surprised when they show up & Rush hasn't got his pants on!
Truly, a u-tube day.

bwahahahahahaha
LMAO!
None too soon.
Great post.. I wish most people would have seen them for the vampires that they are long ago...
The GOP will rise. the end is near... BUT it will be saved by Glenn Beck !
I love Glenn Beck, He is the messiah ! The ONE ! Worship him ! Adore him ! Follow Him, Cry w/ Him !!!
I sit in my Fear Room, I have 20,0000 boxes of ammo and my assault rifles ready for Armageddon. Gosh, I hope it comes soon, I know Glenn Beck is right and it happens any day now. Just wait till Jesus sees me with all my guns and ammo !!!
Would you totally freak out if Armageddon springs on us, Jesus knocked your fear room door - and it turns out that Glenn Beck IS Jesus!?!?! You'd be spraying that ammo in the air with tears of joy streaming down your face..... Wowsers!!!
Reading some of the post here an interesting thought occured to me, most here seem to think that the country is now a left liberal country and Obama being elected completely confirms that belief, so by that way of thinking over the past 8yrs the country was a country of rightwing neo cons since the neo cons won two elections, so whoever wins the election right or left thats where the whole country now resides and all who think differently than the current adminastration are out of touch and irrelevent.
The best part of comments on stories about the condition of the R party is that the ones like yours appear with the intent of demonstrating intellectual prowess and profound thinking - when in actuality, you end up unwittingly, but decisively, proving the point of the author. Thanks so much for that.
Actually, I think that's the perception of the Right (or at least the perception of the Right self-appointed spokespeople) and how the perception shakes out in general when reduced to simple zero-sum terms during political and media discourses like this one.
The truth, more likely, is relative to perception: a combination of the right-wing shift over the decade to an (in my view) anarchic extreme combined with the politics of "the other" - campaigning on a platform of fear and loathing by characterizing the "enemy" as being further left than they actually are. In respect to recent history, the Democratic platform is largely a relative center; most most points and platforms either restore pre-Bush or pre-NeoCon damage, re-establish rule of law, or continue those policies which can be truly considered leftist simply where they last left off.
Although you are correct in seeing any Administration as at once both a parent and child of it's own time.
Ultimately, the Bush years were less nurture and more nature than most, "wounding (itself ) when finding none to fight withal" and it is not for nothing commentators - long before 9/11 - were already making comparisons to Shakespearean story lines complete with behind-the throne usurpers and princely heirs with something to prove.
And whatever the dynamic, any honest Republican will admit they have, rather than "the commies, the queers, the jews!", only themselves to blame.
It's not people's political persuasions so much as the Republican Party's stubborn refusal to acknowledge them. Conservatives mostly don't support the Republican Party anymore because of all the talk about revolution and overthrowing the country. Conservatives are naturally suspicious of that kind of talk and that's one of the main reasons they supported Democratic candidates in such large numbers last November.
