So there it stands: a naked, pigeon-chested old man, random strands of white hair on its boney shoulders; its swollen-knuckled hands clasped over its dead genitals, looking at once forlorn and menacing, shivering with self-loathing and xenophobia, raging pathetically at its timely and appropriate defeat at the hands of Reason.

Ladies and gentlemen: The Republican Party.

With every passing day, the people who stubbornly, maddeningly cling to an obsolete ideal and who stand in the way of the cultural advancement of this country, this America, spew the base reality of their caustic ideology into the air.

The Republican Party is like a dying tyrant, mad with syphilis, ironically like that very Stalin they would accuse their enemies of associating with. How else to account for their desperation to resurrect the wraith of Joseph McCarthy; the hammy and baffling utterances from high level party officials like Boehner and McConnell; the blatant desire on their part to let the country fail out of sheer resentment; the wanton sedition of Conservative shit-stirrers ranging from the quasi Madame Defarge Michele Bachmann to the porcine, pill-popping porcine propagandist Rush Limbaugh?

It is an all out assault on reason, on progress, on truth. What is the difference between the Republican Party and, say, the Taliban? A rogue by any other name would smell as rank. Their frantic accusations all churned out in a futile effort to explain their current pariah status is as pathetic and draconian as stoning a woman in the street.

I feel I must apologize for my own particularly febrile anger. It's unseemly and ugly. But finally, the enemy is clearly outlined. We can see it for what it is and what it always has been. It exists not in myth but in a reality which has plagued humanity for millennia: utter, hateful ignorance born from a fear of truth, indeed a fear of life itself; a mad and impotent pursuit of some long-forgotten ecstasy having spawned generations of paranoid power addicts who chase the past at the expense of the future, cloaking their real intentions in perfumed patriotism and the seductive swoon of religion.

It's so fitting that we are living in an age where beheadings, torture, piracy and now unbridled power mongering are all common place. Perhaps that element of humanity is going back into hibernation and is snapping at any and everything before its eyes finally close. In our lifetime the choice has never been so stark.

Don't be intimidated by that naked, pigeon-chested old man. His party's over.

So there it stands: a naked, pigeon-chested old man, random strands of white hair on its boney shoulders; its swollen-knuckled hands clasped over its dead genitals, looking at once forlorn and menacin...

The GOP is dying, that much is for sure. Torn between factions as diverse as radical, left leaning social liberals with a yearning for wealth, to the power and ‘win wars at all cost’ crowd, to the social but secular conservatives, to the religious conservatives; there are just too many there who refuse to work and play with others. Add to that the branch of the GOP that thinks, foolishly, that appealing to the left will win brownie points. Ask John McCain. It doesn't. The problem is, the GOP is, for want of a better word, diverse. Democrats, like liberals, are not. Go to a Democrat convention, and every major speaker believes the same thing about all of the major hot-button issues that every other major speaker does. It's one giant celebration of conformity and goodthink. Oh, there were a few social conservative Democrats pushed for numbers, but don't expect them to be representing the Democrat party anytime soon. Not so the GOP. Trying to appeal to everyone and anyone, they've ended up appealing to no one. It isn't their failure to be just like all Democrats and Liberals that marks their failure. It's their failure to end up being anything to anyone.

How funny you are!

On the one hand, you neo-CON rethugs accuse progressives of being unable to agree and on the other hand, progressives all think the same. Just can't win with the losers, I guess.

Fact is, when it's logical, reasonable, rational and, what the He--, it just might work, a lot of us PROGRESSIVE thinkers just naturally agree.

Give it a try.

Actually, not being a neo-CON rethug, I don't assume that progressives are unable to agree. They may have differences, but when it comes to the power stage, those things go out the window and conformity takes over. And in most hot button issues, I don't see a whole lot of disagreement, unless its over degree. Tell me which major speakers at a recent convention opposed abortion rights, gay unions, or ESCR, and I'll concede the point. Instead of calling names, show me the evidence that I am wrong.

Wait - huh? Is this black is white day? I could have sworn the GOP's success in the past and particularly Bush's "success" was due to the One Message strategy . . .

Then you are mistaken. There has been grumbling in the party since the first losses in the late 90s. Oh, they still could rally, but by the end of Bush' term, splits were happening all over the place.

The neocon-hijacked GOP has been marching in lock-step since 1996, and you call them diverse?
Jeez, even their media shills parrot the same talking points word-for-word.

Your reference to the "Democrat convention" gave you away. It's called the "DEMOCRATIC National Convention."

Get with the program and learn to think for yourself. Or, you can continue to be brainwashed by Fox, Rush, and Wiener-Savage, then join the rest of the GOP at the bottom of the cliff (under the bus).

Are you kidding? Haven't you heard the fighting, the arguing? Don't you read various sites that have members of the GOP, and members leaving the GOP, fighting each other? You do listen to people who are on the actual ‘Right’ don't you?

The 'Democrat' convention and party was a deliberate and facetious reference on my part. In other words, irony based on the fact that everyone in that convention must think the same and talk the same in the name of some bizarre concept of conformity in the name of diversity. I guess it didn't come off as clever as I hoped. That happens on blogs.

I watch Fox no more than I watch CNN and MSNBC. Stop living in a world of stereotypes and generalizations, and you might accomplish more in your arguments.

McCain was giving President Obama a good run during the election until he chose Palin - arguably to appeal and consolidate the conservative base and win over the Hillary voters. But once people figured out where she was coming from and saw what was going on in her rallies - the polls split and McCain never had a chance. So McCain should have appealed more to the middle - instead he took a hard right turn at the GOP convention and sealed his fate.

- daffey I'm a Fan of daffey 25 fans permalink

That's incorrect. McCain trailed Obama from the start. After he picked Palin, he moved ahead for a few weeks. Then, following a media assault that made Dan Quayle's look tame, Palin began to crack. At this point, the race narrowed. Then when the economy tanked, McCain made his famous 'let's suspend the campaign so I can go do DC and do nothing' speech. At that point, the campaign went to Obama and never went back. You can check the history of the tracking polls to see this is true. McCain did appeal to the middle - that was the essence of his campaign. And it basically got him nothing.

I believe that the Republican Party will be in the wilderness for a long time for the following reason.

Just as a pimple comes to a head and finally burst so will this rage, anger and madness that’s been ginned up come to a head and explode. And such as the three officers lost their lives the next lives lost will be more innocent.

There will be a backlash on those who were responsible for this great tragedy. Fox news, Hannity, Beck, Rush, Bachman, and the Republican party for not reigning in the madness will pay a big price. I think Olbermann hit the nail on the head when he said that no Beck and the like are not the hijackers on the plane, but the coward on the ground who gives the order.

Anyone who thinks that the repubs are permaently defunct is living in a fairy tale world.

The truth is, everything ebbs and flows, when it comes to politics. The dems spent a long time in the wilderness. The repubs consolidated and ultimately abused their power. The shite hit the fan, and they were rejected by the electorate.

Now the dems are back in power. Unfortunately, the odds are overwhelming that they too will not just consolidate their power, but ultimately abuse it. The shite will hit the fan again. and the cycle will start over.

The problem is that it is in our nature to be myopic, and to think that what we have right now will always be so...and of course it never works out that way.

"The Republican Party is like a dying tyrant"..................."the blatant desire on their part to let the country fail out of sheer resentment"

When Rush Limbaugh, the defacto leader of the Republican party said that he wants Barack Obama (or his wrongheaded policies) to fail, it's pointed out as an indication of the mean spiritedness and resentment of the losing Republicans and their lack of bi-partisanship which hurts the country. How many Democrats or liberals out there wanted to see George Bush fail at every step or see his presidency destroyed instead of having bi-partisanship for the sake of the country?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:19 PM on 04/11/2009

Quite a few, actually.

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/03/09/guess-who-also-wanted-a-president-to-fail/

I can't speak for Rush, but I personally want Obama and Congress to fail in implementing bad policies. If they do get implemented, then I either want them to succeed and prove me wrong, or if they're going to fail, I want them to do so in a very quick and obvious way so we can learn from it and hopefully not repeat the mistake again.

That seems like a reasonable standard to apply to the government at any time, regardless of who's in charge.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:59 PM on 04/11/2009

Pumpkin,
your standard may be reasonable but your source is far from it based on your link. A fringe right winged nut site with deceptive and fanaticism. And you come here to say 'you can't speak for Rush' ? You can't alright, he and the other radical are speaking for you. Who do you think you are fooling? Next time you want to pose as a reasonable above partisan fellow, try to link an impartial, fair and balanced source.

Big problem with your question "How many wanted to see George Bush fail" well, George Bush made some really stupid decisions - almost destroying the economy single handedly due to bad advice from his "Aides". He and Cheney proved they did not give a damn about Americans but catered to Corporations. Went to war on lies, deceit costing Many thousands of American and Iraqi lives needlessly.

Yep George Bush failed all right. He didnt need help from anyone. He was not qualified to be Potus. He was a klutz, no idea how to conduct himself in any situation. He proved he was inept. He had the manners of a bull in a china shop and a vocabulary of a l2 year old. the list is long. No one wished George Bush to fail. Unfortunately, the man himself was a failure looking for "Daddy's Approval" That is no way to run a country.

You have it wrong. We saw that GWB was already a failure, and protested against that. Consequent events proved that he was wrong, wrong and wrong - just as we said he was. Barak Obama is moving in the right direction, with some issues of concern that we'll see about, but GWB was heading in exactly the opposite direction -away from US prosperity, liberty and the rule of law. I'm so happy we have an intelligent, open minded person as president and I anticipate great results. Stay tuned. It's only been about 81 days since he took office.

Republican "bi-partisanship" was and is, "our way or the highway."

GWB made that clear.

The only way for us to have been bipartisan would have been for us to become - - - republicans.

Well, the corporate elite don't need them anymore, as does the religious folks. The GOP certainly proved that family values + corporate values = embarrassing mistake for all.

"Have the Democrats been bought and paid for too?" is the real question. Ralph Nader made a stinging, politically incorrect remark after Barack Obama was elected. The worst nightmare would be that Ralph's little comment was being anything near accurate.

Brilliant and humorous writing. But what the Republicans represent is a latent virus in humanity's psyche - one that will emerge if and when the conditions are right. Obama knows how to undercut their poisionus partisanship using his well placed mental juijitsu. THe Repubs breed on fear and resentment - its their oxygen.

PRESIDENT Obama doesnt have to do a damn thing. All he has to do is sit back and watch the NeoCons make absolute fools of themselves. They are doing that in spades. They are so foolish that it is becoming entertainment for the world. Keep it up. Only fools will vote Repubs in again. That day will come, but so will a new breed of Republicans. Hopefully ones with ideas. It will take 20 to 30 years.

Eliza, so, in your opinion there was no manipulation in the last 8 years? Are you still waiting for the WMD to show up? do you really believe 'they hate us for our freedom'? You mean to say you were not manipulated by your own party? And what is freedom to you? Conservatives should wash their mouth to speak of freedom after the most gross and outrageous support for the Patriot Act and Gitmo. Freedom? And naive or dim witted people like you keep repeating talking points that the right wing puts in your mouth. Which freedom Obama is going to take from you woman? Get a grip.

Don't ever think the political cycle is over that is a fool's paradise.

Maybe but if you don't believe it then you are not taking an honest look at the Repug party & what they claim to represent. There are certain characteristics in a person that draw them to that side, including but not limited to paranoia, authoritarianism, greed, selfishness, lack of compassion, fear mongering, suppression of minorities, aggressiveness, arrogance and dishonesty. Oh, and the total inability to separate fact from opinion. I am sure I missed some key traits. And add the fact that less than 25% of the country believe what they stand for. So who is going to help them regain power? Are they going to cheat again? Lie to the uninformed and get them riled up to start killing the rest of us? What the plan, Stan?

Republicans tried to make this a one party nation (Republican Party of course) by using every underhanded trick in the book. Their sleazy tactics cost the nation many lives and much treasure, but they did manage to make this a single party nation. It was, however, not the party they had in mind. Now the trick is to keep the current power party of the land from getting corrupt and greedy, and thus starting the cycle all over again.
