Hearts and Minds

We've gone out of our way to redress the terrible treatment many veterans received after returning from the debacle in Vietnam.

And after having the most egregious epithets hurled at them, having to live with the fallout from what was until then the most dishonorable modern military engagement resulting in the loss of 50,000 Americans, we now beg to bestow upon them the honor which sadly eluded them.

So now we applaud them in airports, choke up at videos on YouTube as Iraq and Afghanistan soldiers home on leave surprise their children at spelling bees. Praise is generous and unashamed; derision a thing of the past.

The "kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out" ethos has been replaced with lump-in-the-throat evocations of The Soldier Who Fights for Our Freedom, who sacrifices life and limb so we won't have to. There is the thanks of a grateful nation, the solemn acknowledgement of their service.

But the reality of those who have seen combat and invariably return with deep psychological or physical wounds is that they are given the shortest of shrift. Their very existence, let alone vaunted war experience, is downplayed.

We have as a nation been duped by those who use our guilt about how we treated the innocent pawns in the Vietnam War game -- the soldiers -- into missing the point once again about the utter senselessness that is war. Because by sugar-coating the reality of sending young men and women into battle, especially for reasons that don't quite jibe with the jingoistic justifications supplied by war's proponents, we are doing even more of a disservice to our soldiers than when we shouted "Baby killer!" at them.

By associating The Soldier with treacle-drenched spectacle guaranteed to induce an emotional response, we are actively disassociating ourselves from the reality of their experiences and the real reasons for the wars being waged. The patriotism, hope and commitment demonstrated by our soldiers is being cheapened by forces which have no respect for that very patriotism, hope and commitment.

Like so many things in our country today, traditions and institutions have been co-opted by profiteers who would use them for ulterior motives. Epitomized by the Iraq War, the actual reasons for its prosecution were never sufficient to justify the horrific casualties incurred by Americans and Iraqis alike. So it was with pulse-pounding, heart-swelling fiction that the war was waged and once again, as the stated reasons began to peel away one by one to reveal the callous greed which lay beneath, the soldier was left to take the blows, to feel the pain, to mitigate the guilt.

And yet:

* Approximately 150,000 of our nation's veterans are homeless.

* There are approximately 1,000 suicide attempts per month among veterans seen in VA medical facilities.

* The suicide rate among individuals in the VA's care may be as high as 7.5 times the national average.

* Approximately 300,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars - nearly 20% of the
returning forces - are likely to suffer from either PTSD or major depression.

* An additional 320,000 of the returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan may have
experienced traumatic brain injuries during deployment.

* 116,000+ civilian deaths have been reported in Iraq.

* Military contractors outnumbered American soldiers in Afghanistan.

* KBR, Halliburton and many other companies made billions and billions and billions of dollars in profits from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

These facts should be enough to dissuade the American people from the efficacy of any war waged on behalf of corporate interests, which after World War 2 pretty much describes all wars America has engaged in. But instead, we are now distracted by our assuaged guilt over our treatment of the veterans returning from Vietnam.

We now feel genuine affection for the soldier, we now grieve as one for our wounded warriors' deaths and their family's losses; we wipe away tears for the commitment and courage of our young men and women in uniform. We have made up for the ill treatment of our returning soldiers from that ignoble episode. Our hearts, finally, are open.

Now we must open our minds.

The ending of the draft kept me out of Vietnam. From that point on, I was determined to always support our veterans by voting for pols who oppose needless wars and support veteran's rights and benefits.

If anything good could be taken from that terrible war, it was the belief that SURELY no president would ever place our military and nation in such a pointless and needless conflict ever again.

Ironic then that a president and vice president (war hawks who had both manged to find a way to avoid Vietnam), became the very leaders who would once again drag this nation, through deceit, into a modern version of Nam within living memory of that horrendous mistake.

And double the irony that a man, Colin Powell, who HAD served with honor in Vietnam and fully understood it's folly, would ignore his conscience and aid and abet this terrible new military calamity.

And today, even with Iraq's folly just months behind us, we have a Republican Party and it's presidential candidate, contemplating even MORE wars ahead. A presidential candidate who, along with his sons, has/have never served.

The ULTIMATE irony? A Democratic president eliminated Osama, which the Republican civilian "warriors" failed at and brush off as "no big deal."

I support the troops! I want them home with their families, and given all the support they need to recover from their ordeal. It's the least I, who never served, can do to honor their bravery.

Amazing, isn't it?

Other nations, after suffering a terrorist attack by a handful of thugs, pick themselves up and move on. Dealing with the attack appropriately, as a problem for their police forces.

We get attacked by a handful of thugs, and go into a decades-long panic! Sending hundreds of thousands of troops to endless quagmires, crash our economy and begin eliminating our citizen's freedoms.

Osama may sleep with the fishes, but his plan to destroy us has and is being dutifully carried out. By us.

right with ya my wordsmithie. the cruelty of expecting the same men and women to go back again and again and again and again is an outrage. expecting volunteers to shoulder the burden, instead of re-instituting the draft is a travesty. outsourcing everything but the maiming and dying for profit is a mortal sin.

An educated nation will not get excited about war, and educated soldiers will not blindly follow orders they know to be unjust. But our politicians continue to dilute and dismantle our education system. people in power hate to be questioned, yet they are the ones who should always be questioned.

Thank you, Steven, for highlighting such an important and neglected part of the story of American veterans.

The governmemts P.R.machine has been in full swing these past 10 years. In the meantime Veterans have to wait years for benefits, the G.I. Bill is not fully funded which means that Veterans have to take student loans.

In Los Angeles thousands of Veterans are homeless. There is a 400 acre site that was deeded to Veterans. This has empty buildings where homeless Veterans can be housed, yet the government chooses to lease this valuable property to campaign donors. The V.A. has been and is still broken.

War profiteers have learned how to make money off these wars, without giving bach to Veterans.

Defense contracors have lobbyist who give politicians money.
Hollywood takes military experiences and makes them into movies/t.v. shows. They also give politicians campaign money.

Those on the right and left are War Profiteers, who say "support the troops" while making money off of them.

Rather than some flippant quip regarding the difficulty of alliterations using 'j', I'll instead just say 'Thank you' for writing this piece.

You perhaps also voice something between the lines we just don't discuss enough in OUR country, and that's the responsibility we have as citizens to ensure EVERY mission assigned OUR brothers and sisters in uniform - is one of 'honor and respect'. Though some 40%+ opposed the invasion of Iraq it was insufficient to halt that rush to war. Then during that 2nd war and while considering a possible 3rd, the government decides 2005 is a good time to tell us the Gulf of Tonkin incident didn't 'quite' happen as previously reported.

ANYONE not yet taking that responsibility seriously might at least ask themselves 'why'...

I don't think we'll ever put the value of lives over the profits of war

-A Soldier's Call-

In reverence to those lamed or who fall
Upholding the honor of a soldier's call
Our sons and daughters we put forth
In harm's way with little remorse
They are first to fight when our nation cries
But few tears are shed when another dies
Too quick to offer our best and bravest
We don't deserve their sacrifice to save us

Great article...I feel the same way. The greatest "honor" we could give the armed forces..Is to not dishonor them by sending them into unjust and immoral invasions like we did with the Iraq conflict. Maybe we should spend more time evaluating the political and financial reasons that start wars..And less time giving litmus tests to our fellow citizens about how much they appreciate the troops.

Steven- It's great to see you back here again, telling the brutally honest truth with great eloquence. I am disappointed that Chris Hayes apologized for also telling the truth about how we, as a nation, are manipulated by buzzwords and visions of sugarplum patriotism, into going along with whatever the corporate war machine has in mind. It's about time that we, as a nation, demand that history stop repeating itself.

We can no longer blame the country or the government. We cannot blame '9/11' or the taliban. Instead as Buffy Saint Marie says, its the 'Universal Soldier' who is really to blame. There is no draft. Every soldier fighting made the choice. Every one knows what the bullets do and who they are shooting at. There is no culpable denial. We cannot pretend ignorance. For those who truly believe that they are fighting, killing and dieing for 'God and Country', I am sorry that you were lied to and tricked and I want you out and home, NOW! For those who join the military because man is the best game? You deserve the nightmares you get.

Perhaps if the concept of service to Country, military or otherwise, were truly shared among all citizens, we would all feel a responsibility to help the veteran.

If we gave a damn about our vets we would reactivate the GI bill and expand the VA health system (socialized medicine) to accomodate all the physical and psychic casualties of our recent (and past) military misadventures. The vets instead will return home to neglect: no jobs, skimpy medical care--especially psychiatric care. We're about three trillion dollars short on covering the cost of caring for the troops who served the past dozen years. I suspect a lot of that money is being redirected to our privatized mercenaries and corporate contractors. Our blindness to our own failings is truly shocking. Since the end of WWII we have learned nothing about our drift into neo-imperialism. Sic transit gloria Americanae.

Meanwhile Romney the chicken hawk is ready to ramp up military spending and threatening to invade and occupy yet another nation. He wraps himself in a flag, scares people by telling them it's a dangerous world (it is, for our soldiers), and lies to us all about his motives.
