What Lies Beneath

It's been fascinating watching the once imperious Republican machine staggering around the very institutions in which they only so recently swaggered. The all-encompassing cluelessness that Repubs have lately shown is far more stunning than even the years of Democratic ball-lessness during the bleak Bush years. That was just maddening. This is ball-less, brainless, senseless, gormless -- and downright enjoyable.

Yeah, enjoyable.

Good to have them stripped of their arrogant, impervious facades and exposed to the world as the things we always knew writhed beneath. The lizard-lidded Boehner, the reedy and ineffectual Jindal, the fribble Palin, the sputtering Limbaugh, the swollen Hannity, the whole dead-end pseudo-Conservative horde stripped of their tools for wreaking havoc, all on full display, yakking, spitting.

HIstory is full of cruel characters whose twisted paths converge with other similarly embittered wanderers. Under the right conditions, usually an atmosphere of deep-seated fear and unrelenting frustration, their anger intertwines, forming a dense and impenetrable briar. And even the cold ideology cradled within its stinging, protective nettles somehow becomes alluring for the purity of its design, its simplistic ability to coldly classify right and wrong, patriot and traitor. Unchecked, it grows and seethes and finally reaches the point when, propelled by its own weight, it rolls and tramples all who try to oppose its momentum. This is what happened after the well meant but ultimate failure of the Carter presidency and the meticulously sown seeds of the Reagan Revolution. At least to me, it is.

History serves as more than a litany of human exploits; it is a mirror reflecting the very nature of humanity and as such is implacable and pitiless and defies our ability to assign a satisfying meaning to it all in spite of our attempts to do so.

And yet, when the callous causes and the cruel characters eventually lose their momentum, the nettles untwist and expose the ideology within for all its pathetic wickedness, which is where we now find ourselves. This is a moment to observe the bestial side of American politics, of the American psyche and of what they can both become if circumstances allow. It is on daily display, with the inane utterances of the flailing right-wing punditry and feeble attempts at opposition of the demoralized Republican minority. It has been denuded, it seems, for our edification.

But if history is any indication -- and it is -- we'd better get smart while we have the chance.

It's been fascinating watching the once imperious Republican machine staggering around the very institutions in which they only so recently swaggered. The all-encompassing cluelessness that Repubs hav...

The only way to "get smart" is to go after the beast..Talk radio. It reaches 10's of millions each day all day. It has brainwashed America to believe that the RNCorp is the fiscal conservative party, that they support our troops (see R senate votes for vets and troops) that they are the PRO LIFE party, (after how many votes and dollars spent the only policy they gave you is "abstinence ony")
and the Super Big Lie that the media is liberally biased.....see 8 yrs of George W Bush.
Wake up and go after the beast that is destroying this country within.

"nettles untwist"

I love the turn of phrase.

What lies beneath republicans is LIES, LIES, LIES.

Republicans PROVED they cannot govern and don't want to.
They do want GREED, PROFITS, OBSTRUCTION and CHAOS
to smoke-screen their corruption and self-profits while
destroying America every-which-way.

Republicans proved to be despicable traitors to America.
Republicans proved they want America to FAIL.

Any political party captured by their respective extremist wings becomes a danger, not only to their own party and the opposition, but to any and all who respect rule of law and a government operating by consent of its people; all its people. It is indeed refreshing to see the left ideologies finding an equal footing with the right as our "peculiar experiment" in democratic government continues.
Oh, and beware of Newt Gingrich's growing popularity. This guy has an almost sociopathic ability to grow strength in very scary, extreme right viewpoints. In my opinion the biggest snakeoil salesman of them all.
08:54 AM on 02/28/2009
Yes, quite enjoyable watching them oppose the continuation of their own policies just because it's the other side doing it. More enjoyable is all of those currently appeased because the group they love to hate is opposing that continuity. Most enjoyable, of course, is observing the mass ignorance of the fact that statement of opposition does not equal opposition. Hey, wait! None of this is enjoyable.

I'll grant you it might 'appear' the republican'ts have lost their edge some, and that their ideology's gotten long-in-the-tooth lately. But, Steven, ANY hillbilly knows better than to back a 'possum into a corner.

Hm... the last possum I backed into a corner made some terrified noises, pretended he was going to attack, then fainted dead away......oh I see the comparison now. Republicans are pretty much like that, too. They don't 'appear' to have lost their edge... they have gone completely over it. Their ideology is what has nearly destroyed the country, and hopefully with a lot of luck, and some excellent planning by the new president, we will all be able to pull our economy out of the nose dive it was put into by eight years of the most incompetent crew we have ever had in government. Obama has already started to repair the damage to our reputation throughout the world, and most of the country is feeling optimistic for a change- well, except for the remaining twenty percenters who still are unable to get past being 'owned' by Rush Limbaugh (his words, not mine) By the way. I am still trying to understand what kind of man allows another man to say that he 'owns the men' ? Are you all mindless sheep?

Some actually will bite, but many also just urinate and defecate everywhere - including on themselves, and smell almost as pretty as a polecat.

Steven. . . . keep up the good work.

The more we can talk about the Repub's, the less we need to make excuses for President Obama, and it's beginning to be a challenge.

Extending the war in Iraq and leaving 50k troops after promising to "end the war" is going to be a bit hard to divert attention from the public.

"We will be as careful getting out as we were careless going in."
How many times did Obama say that on the campaign trail? How many? Oh about a thousand and one. How many times did he say that as President, he would actually listen to the people on the ground, and if necessary, modify his position. How many? Oh, about a thousand and one.

You are exactly right. He is doing exactly what a good president would do. And for Christ's sake, President Obama has only been in office for a month. He is doing the right thing by making the tough decisions now, in the beginning of his term.

Steven Weber, I absolutely love your blogs, as much as I love your acting.... so versitle. Thanks you!

You've hit the nail on the head. It's great that our eyes have been opened to the Republicans in more ways than one. I also agree that the time is now for us to get as smart as we can, to make sure that the type of ARROGANT HYPOCRICY the GOOPers/TNC/Republican Party represents to the core, NEVER happens again in our country again.

That will take being a good watchman and diligence on ALL of our part. Lest we all grow complacent and forget just how slimy the GOOPers can get, and just how much they seem to have contempt for their fellow Americans.
03:42 PM on 02/27/2009
Ah, but lest you become what you so dispise one would suggest you tone down th rhetoric. I know, you are one of the many who declare the democrats have not "b___s", but they you were also, probably, of the tribe that kept urging Obama to get 'tuf', bet 'aggresive', etc. But see, no need, he won your vote because your full of the same vitriol I have always seen on the right. Shame to see it on the left, but alas extremes are always pubnacious and a bit off putting.

Now what counts are the vast middle who voted for him. This courteous and sensible gentleman also managed to convince a goodly number of republicans to come on over to his side.

So tone it down my friends. Don't become as distatesful in winning as the other side. Don't confuse dignity, manners, and standards with a lack of "ba__s". A punch in the nose may get someone's attention but it isn't convincing in the long run.

Glad to see you using the word 'arrogant', Mr. Weber in referencing the Republicans. I was watching Tom DeLay on HARDBALL last night, and that smirking arrogance of his was still apparent in all it's glory. He was laughing out loud at some of the things Harold Ford was saying, and there was only thing I could think:

-- WHEN IS YOUR PARTY GOING TO REALIZE THAT AMERICANS DON'T LIKE ARROGANCE AND SNARKINESS? You got whipped royally on Nov. 4th, and yet you guys (and gals) STILL don't get it and you still have no clue - not ONE - why it happened so overwhelmingly. --
