In a few weeks close to fifty million Americans will vote against their own interests by choosing John McCain. Why? Idealism, greed, racism, and fear for starters. I tend to believe the main reason is stupidity.
I grew up on Long Island and spent two summers as a toll keeper on the Atlantic Beach Bridge. Great job if you love the outdoors and don't mind emphysema. About a mile from the toll plaza was a sign that read: "Toll Ahead 50 Cents". A similar sign appeared about a half mile closer.
As you approached the tollbooth, a very large sign on plaza read: "Slow Down. Pay Toll. 50 cents." As you pulled into my lane there was a blinking sign that read "50 cents." When I leaned out the window of my booth, a neon sign flashed right in the driver's face "50 cents." Over the course of one eight-hour shift, at least thirty people would ask me "How much?" "One dollar" I'd reply. Nine times out of ten they'd pay it. I'd ring up the 50 cents and pocket the rest.
Now this was a suburb of New York City and the people in the cars were, for the most part, savvy Manhattanites. Can you imagine if I worked at a bridge today in oh, let's say West Virginia and the traffic was all heading to a McCain/Palin rally? I'd make a mint and retire early.
If you think Obama is a Muslim, you're stupid. If you think he's a terrorist, you're a dope. If you think Sarah Palin would make a good President, send me fifty dollars and I'll pass it on to her. Promise.

Wow, that was absolutely ignorant. I just wasted a minute of my life reading it.
McCain said Governor Palin was the most qualified person he could find to be Vice President. So it must be true.
I don't understand.
/sarcasm
I am not planning to vote for John McCain, but as a former West Virginian, I take offense to your snarky assumptions about the people of my home state. Yes, it's true that George Bush won West Virginia in the last two elections, but the state is primarily democratic at the state and local levels, and has a long history of electing Democratic presidents.
And really -- what was the purpose of this posting? If you are truly upset by the possibility that in choosing McCain/Palin, people will be voting against their self interests, then you might want to try making a more rational appeal to their interests rather than decrying their ignorance and stupidity because they have the misfortune of living in a culture outside of "savvy" New York.
And to you, AlaskanToo, way to sound like a Republican, using a condescending phrase like "these people."
I'm not hitting any particular state, hell, I live in Florida...that's as bad as it gets (we had the other shrub)!!! It's just frustrating that so many people can't see through the sh** and are voting against their best interest! When I drive to work, I have to drive through a small, low class community and there are probably half a dozen m/p signs. No, those people are not voting their best interest, I guess they like being poor! It's sad!!
Yes! These people need a catscan for starters.
Hah! That evokes a vision of Homer Simpson's.

Insert Barnum quote here.

I could elaborate......!
My name tag was Ms. B. Have.
Hey, if it were not for stupid people, the horror and slash/gore film genre would go the way of the dinosaur. Imagine that. So they do serve a purpose, even if every now and then they annoy the hell out of a toll taker.
It's about small favors, Stu
LOL. I have to laugh - i once worked in a motel, where there was a huge sign above the front desk with a huge arrow, saying, TO THE RESTAURANT. It was simply astounding how many people would come in and ask where the restaurant was!! I grew to hate that job just because of that. My husband and i laff about it now, 35 yrs later.
The Republicans have been the party of Stupid since 2000. Oh, they've flirted with it before then, but with Bush they've been in the pocket of Stupid, and they're just getting worse. We might perhaps solve a lot of this country's problems by investing heavily in NASA and then offering them all free vacations on the sun.
Not since 2000, since 1980 when Reagan was elected and the country bought the trickle down obvious lie.
LOL! Stu Kreisman, you tell the truth...with no sugar.
You promise?
Great article
This is certainly rather blunt. Unfortunately I can't find much with which to disagree.
There is a whole lot of stupid here in PA - fortunately we have a financial collapse, two unending wars and the WORST president in the history of humanity to nudge enough idiots to the correct side on this election....................... but think about this for a sec - how about if things weren't nearly as bad as they are now??....... Scary thought, huh??
