The Worst Fans in Sports

What's Your Reaction:

Last night the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 111-96 to complete a four game sweep in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. That's the headline, but what really should be reported is the disgusting abuse the Utah fans heaped on Laker Derek Fisher.

A little background here: Fisher is the starting guard for the Lakers. He left LA a few years ago after eight years for a better contract with the Golden State Warriors. Two years later, the Warriors traded him to Utah. During his stint away from Los Angeles, his daughter was born with retinoblastoma, cancer of the eye. Since Salt Lake City and its environs didn't have a hospital equipped to treat this rare form of the disease, Fisher traveled all over the country seeking medical help for his daughter. After a season commuting between New York, Los Angeles and back to Utah, Fisher asked Jazz owner Larry Miller to release him from his contract so he could play in a city that had the care his daughter needed. Miller graciously let Fisher go. Fisher went on to re-sign with the Lakers. His daughter now 5, has 50% of her vision back thanks to the medical care in Los Angeles.

Sports fans are a loutish bunch. I know because I grew up in New York and saw the behavior whenever the Boston Celtics or Bruins came to Madison Sq. Garden. Giant fans hate Dodger fans. Cardinal and Cub fans don't exactly get along and everybody hates the Dallas Cowboys. I'm not even mentioning Philadelphia fans and British soccer hooligans. You've got to have a thick skin to be a professional athlete. However the treatment of Fisher this past week by the Utah fans was beyond deplorable.

Whenever Fisher touched the ball during the two games in Utah, he was booed loudly. Okay, fair enough. A couple of times the chant of "Fisher Sucks" echoed throughout the arena which is just a few blocks from Tabernacle Square, the epicenter of the Mormon church. Pretty tasteless but I've seen worse. Worst happened last night.

Two women somehow got their hands on a pair of tickets in the front row on the baseline. They were wearing bright green tee shirts with the words "Fisher Lied" printed on them. The two were impossible to miss. Maybe they were thinking that their "stunt" would land them some face time on national television. It did. TNT showed a close up of these disgusting cretins.

Now I'm no prude when it comes to obnoxious fans. I've done my share of booing and "Bullshit" chants. (In fact, I was present at the sporting event where the "Bullshit" chant began. It was at a Knicks - Milwaukee Bucks playoff game at the Garden in 1970. It started a section away from me in the blue seats in the upper deck after the refs let Bucks center Kareem Abdul-Jaabar (Then known as Lew Alcindor) get away with a flagrant foul. The chant started slowly and was confined to about four sections. Most people were shocked even in the blue seats and it only lasted about a minute. The next day all the New York papers were filled with stories about the obscene fans and their disgusting, horrible chant.) However directing one's hate and ridicule at a father whose only offense was to seek the best treatment for his infant daughter is below contemptible.

"Fisher Lied?" About what? He faked his daughter's disease in order to escape Utah and rejoin the Lakers? He used his daughter's disease to get a better contract? How can someone's mind even go to into a place as dark that? Apparently these two Utah fans, who are no doubt proud of the middle finger they gave to the Fisher family. Good God. Does anyone doubt for a moment that Derek Fisher would give up all his money, fame and championships in exchange for a cure for his daughter? "Fisher Lied?" Why weren't these two assholes escorted from their front row seats and out on the streets where they belong? At the very least the Utah management should have told them to turn their shirts inside out. But no, apparently a basketball game is more important to these knuckle-draggers than common decency or the health of an innocent child.

At sporting events an announcement is usually made before the game asking fans to refrain from using profane language. Banners and signs that contain obscenities are removed by stadium security as soon as they're displayed. But not in Utah, a state that boasts of its family values. Pathetic, hate-filled hypocrites.

Stay classy, Utah.

How little must you have going in your own life to go to the trouble of having these stupid T shirts made...whether you like the guy or not. Apparently life is so dull in Utah, you have to insert yourself into an out of state basketball player's life. Don't know the player, don't care about whether he "lied" or not. If he wanted to play elsewhere so he could get the doctor of HIS choice so be it. If he used it as a ploy, doesn't affect my life. If they didn't want him to play elsewhere, they should have made it a part of the deal to release him....oh that would have cost them money. right.

Again Ignorance. Fisher is no con man. Also do you realize that his daughter Tatum is being treated at St.Jude in L A?....Not New York but St.Jude in L A, southern California. Though Utah might have great medical clinics the doctors treating his daughter are in L A. Which of course has some of the finest medical institutes in the United States......When Boozer leaves Utah are all you going to rant and stir up rumors as to why he left? He has been talking about leaving the entire season!...Fisher gave Utah and its fans more than most players can say. Like coming back after his daughters surgery and hitting those shots to keep the Jazz in the series. Seems like JAZZ fans have short term memory. Look at the facts those of you who continue to rant, we all know you wont shut up until the JAZZ win a championship or Fisher retires. Again JAZZ fans and Laker haters keep eating your sour grapes......why are we still talking about the JAZZ and their fans??? Kobe brought his broom to the game and cleaned the floor with JAZZ team.......SWEPT AWAY.......KEEP CRYING HATERS

Whether you want to call it a lie or not, Fisher did take Larry Miller's goodwill gesture and repaid him by stabbing him in the back. Larry knew he'd been had but said he would do the same thing over again because it was the right thing to do regardless of what the other guys motives were.

How did Fisher stab Larry Miller?

Woaa - hold on here emmy boy - Derek Fisher is the slime ball who used his sick daughter to go to the Fakers, I mean Lakers. When you have the premiere cancer institute The Huntsman Cancer Center right there in SLC that is world class for cancer treatments his 'poor me my poor daughter needs to go to LA for cancer treatment..' was a bunch of crock. But whatever - get going baldy - derek fisher is a bum! And another thing emmy boy - what makes you think that Utah wants his or your kind here anyway?

Fisher was, at the relevant time, a backup point guard with a guaranteed contract paying him 20 mil. In letting him go, the Jazz saved themselves the remaining dollars owed on their contract with an overpaid backup point guard and then used that saved money to sign their current point guard, the best player on their team, to a contract extension. So why be angry? He did you a favor, no matter what the reason.

Lastly, as the one soul remarked on the one LA Times blog, some also need to stop flattering themselves. A Lakers-Jazz rivalry? Sorry, folks, but the Jazz are barely a blip on the Lakers radar. Again, don't flatter yourself.

Almost forgot, but maybe the shirts might have had a more lasting using. Take off the Fisher and sub-in Boozer. Everyone who knows the Cavs-Boozer story will get the point. So can you say, hypocrisy?

Kreisman has his facts wrong. According to AP at the time, the Jazz "agreed to release guard Derek Fisher from his contract Monday so he can concentrate on finding the best care for his 11-month-old daughter, who has cancer in her left eye." He said at the time that he may not play basketball again, but "didn't rule it out", and was celebrated at the time for putting his family's interests ahead of the game. Well guess what, one month later Fisher signed with the Lakers for big $$. Guess it didn't take him long to care for his daughter. He travels just as much (or more) than he did with the Jazz, and we all know pro athletes and their families live wherever they want, dad is on the road most of the time anyway.

So yes, Fisher did lie, or at least didn't tell the truth. Fans treated him with utmost respect when he was in Utah. After he missed a playoff game for the Jazz because of her illness, the fans welcomed him back with a standing ovation. So he asks out of his contract to "care" for his daughter, the Jazz agree and are not even able to trade him and get anything in return (because he says he may not play again). Then he signs with Jazz' division rival soon after. So yes, I think Jazz fans have a right to be upset (and I'm a Lakers fan).
Kreisman, get it right.

good point. there was something "fishy" going on there.
09:30 AM on 05/15/2010
Come on. Fisher was costing 20-mil a year as a backup pg and was hardly
a contributing factor to the the Jazz's results.

I agree with what you are saying about how it was ignorant for the two girls to were the shirts, but I disagree with the title, When I first read the title I thought you was calling all Jazz fans the worst until I read the story. I was at first surprised at fisher being let go, but when I found out the reason I was happy miller was willing to do that. Not all Jazz fans boo fisher nor are unhappy about the situation. I think it is a misrepresentation on your part at the end where you said "But not in Utah, a state that boasts of its family values. Pathetic, hate-filled hypocrites." You need to be more specific and not classify it as the whole state. Because I would of done the same thing that miller did and I also did not care that he joined the Lakers (Of course a little upset we got swept, but part of the game and being a fan).

Utah should be ashamed for their actions. He had a legitimate reason for leaving

Although Mr. Kreisman, you have every right to criticize sports fans in any way you see fit, so do the fans have every right to try to intimidate opposing players in any way they see fit (within stated rules/laws).
Your article begs several questions:
Did Derek Fisher make any effort to ask the Utah fans if it was okay for him to move to another team before asking to be traded?
Did the Utah owner pole the season ticket holders to see if it was okay for him to move Fisher?
Should fans ask permission of players, coaches, gm's or owners and how they should conduct themsleves during games (asuming they aren't breaking any stated rules or laws)?
Who pays for the players salaries and helps build the palaces that the sporting events are heald in?
Couldn't Fisher have retired rather than travel all over the country and then ask to be traded?
In this situation, who do you suppose is free to do what they want to without asking permission from others and who is not?

Oh for Pete's sake. Fisher has to ask FANS and how he's going to spend his career? Athletes are not children or property. Just because you pay for a ticket gives you no right to claim ownership of anything other than that ticket. All your questions above are beyond ridiculous.

See lafan's comment above.
I guess the facts turn out to be inconveniant for Mr. Kreisman's original point (not new for an american sports author) and your criticism of me.

well...how dare a gladiator not die by the sword and instead go to another arena? Y'know, their very existence is for our entertainment...it's our right as an american to entertainment of our choice...
12:16 PM on 05/14/2010
LOL... So now a player or owner has to ask the FANS before making a move? What a recipe for disaster that would be.

Have to agree with Bobby Knight, who said about coaching (paraphrasing here) that as soon as you start making decisions based on what the guys up in the stands want, it won't be long before you're watching the games right next to them.

JimR, you remind me of a broken pencil: You're missing the point.
Just like a player does not have to ask the fans anything, the fans don't have to ask the player anything either. It should work both ways, right?

I doubt most of the fans booing Fisher knew about the circumstances surrounding his daughter's illness. It's easy to do stupid things when someone doesn't have the whole story.

That said, I think that people in general should be more respectful whether or not they are at a sporting event.

Excellent post. I was appalled by these two ignorant, insensitive, boorish women, and wonder how they would feel if God forbid their child suffered such a horrific disease--as a baby, nonetheless.
My two sons were in elementary school and middle school, respectively, when we met Derek Fisher in between games of Summer Pro League, back when it was held at the Long Beach Pyramid. He not only autographed for them, but spent 10-12 minutes discussing school, family and God with them. I was so very moved by the attention he gave them. There just isn't a nicer guy in all of pro sports, but these are among the basest of fans. Shame on them, shame on the Jazz for permitting such inhumane meanness in their building.

When I saw this title I was going to remind everybody of the fans from Philadelphia. Glad to know this knowledge isn't contained to the East coast.

There are boorish fans everywhere not just Philadelphia. I'm from Philadelphia, and have gone to many sports events there, have never thrown a beer, thrown up on someone, tossed snowballs or batteries or anything else other than enjoy the games win or lose. No one seems to remember when Mario Lemuiex retired he got a standing ovation in Philly, or when the little girl threw the ball back her dad caught and gave her at a phils game and started crying the dad hugged her and the crowd cheered. There are louts all over, usually fueled by too much alcohol. Philadelphia's premier lout, Goveronr Ed Rendell (a new yorker by the way) then mayor, started the snowballing of Jimmy Johnson when he was with the Cowboys by making a bet that someone near him couldn't hit the field with a snowball. Please don't judge us all by the acts of a few morons
