Body Parts as Fashion

Manhattan street fashion has come to mean to me flashing glimpses of body parts. Not so much what people are wearing, but what they're not wearing. Last season it was about the Achilles tendon and other vulnerable parts of the young female foot-- such as toenails groomed and painted aqua or black.

Women have outdone men this week. Striding down Central Park South yesterday was a thin young girl in short white shorts. Each long step she took revealed the bottom of one of her perfect butt cheeks.

It was a hypnotic city dance. We all turned and smiled as she crossed at the light and disappeared into the Time Warner building.

I'd thought drastic decolletage was going to be the newest fashion. But the beauty of body parts as fashion statements is in part that it's always a great surprise.

What a great city.
