What This War Costs Us All

Are you as tired as I am of the politicians saying we "can't afford" universal healthcare?

Think about all the things we could do if we weren't spending untold sums on this war. Watch the video, and sign the American Friends Service Committee's Defund/Refund petition.

This war is really about profits for the already wealthy owners of the energy companies and the military industrial complex.
Over the past 4 years we have spent over 1 trillion dollars on the Iraq war.
What could we do with one trillion dollars?
300 billion dollars could fund the Apollo Alliance 10-point plan for energy independence, resulting in no more need to import foreign oil.
Let's build the renewable energy infrastructure we need to make us energy independent. It will go a long way to solving a lot of other problems.

Forty-seven years ago last month, General of the Army "Ike" Eisenhower warned us about this in his parting address to the nation at the close of his Presidency.

"Ike" rose to the highest possible rank in the Army .. five(!) stars .. before becoming Commander in Chief. He saw the rise of the military industrial complex (a term which he himself coined) and he observed its flaws both as a military commander and as a politician.

Today, we are faced with a bitter and total manifestation of everything he warned us about.

He predicted that it could be the ruin of us all.

"Ike was right."

We are still not quite at the point of confronting this well-moneyed monster we have made. But it is confronting us.

I don't think that we'd be able to afford it even so. As much money as we are wasting on the war, we are borrowing it all, PLUS we have a deficit in the BUDGETED expenses....

Now, were we to do the politically unpopular thing, and not only stop fighting the wars, but also cut our military down to no more than 2-3 times what the next biggest military spends, THEN we could afford to fix our infrastructure, provide ACTUAL education to our children, AND provide single payer health care to every American. PLUS we'd have a surplus, and could start paying down our $10 Trillion national debt!!!

It makes you want to cry. Where are the leaders of the DNC demanding a stop to this madness.I am sick of the politics and lapdog media allowing this to go on and on.
Let's stop playing 24/7 campaign news and deal with this before it is too late.
It is not JUST about $...How many I raq citizens have been killed, maimed or displaced? What if a Country came here to tell us what kind of Govt. we should have? WAKE UP AMERICA!!

Sorry, Susan, we have been abandoned by EVERY SINGLE POLITICIAN in the country. We, the people HAVE NO VOICE. There will be no end to the occupation of Iraq. Both Clinton and Obama are far to cowardly to go up against their military hardware and military contractor contributors. Anyway, McCain will be appointed president and he will drain the country to fund and staff the occupation that he loves so much. The end of America is approaching, Susan. I would advise you to start a 'survival' garden. You'll need it.

So far, we have spent AT LEAST one trillion dollars on the illegal invasion and occupation of a sovereign nation that posed no threat to either the security or to the sovereignty of the United States. And the Congress STILL WON'T IMPEACH! So, we limp along with inadequate health care for children and the elderly, while members of the government get the best health care in the world. Welcome to OUR oligarchy.

Wow. I "know" the facts but grasping them is still painful.

Sadly, untrue. We're borrowing ALL the money

for the war. We certainly wouldn't be borrowing

money for universal healthcare. No way would we do that!
