White Barn Inn & Spa

Why it's worth it:
Romantic seaside village retreat for adults with exceptional, locally-sourced food, a serene and lovely pool and a small spa.

In-the-know: Suite Eight has a double-sided fireplace visible from bedroom and bath. The Pier is great at sunset for a bite and drink; utterly charming and atmospheric seaside laid-back.

A good source says: "Sophisticated inn situated in a colorful seaside resort community, 30 minutes southwest of Portland." Andrew Harper, July 2010

Some places just say 'romance': Paris, Morocco, Maine... Yes, Maine! more specifically, the White Barn Inn and Spa, in Kennebunk.

26 rooms are delicate and romantic, decked out in a classic contemporary style with plush fabrics, soft colors and comfy-cozy touches like deep armchairs or fireplaces. This is about intimacy rather than grandeur - very cute and quiet. The waterfront cottages offer utmost privacy overlooking the Kennebunk River: private entrances and waterfront patios, a short walk from the main building. (A good option if staying here more than 2 nights)

Accommodations aside, one of the main reasons to visit is the food. Executive chef Jonathan Cartwright is passionate about his ingredients, able to explain the provenance of all of his locally sourced foods. The signature dish is the Kennebunkport lobster... delicious.

In addition, the property offers a cute spa, with a surprisingly large amount of treatments (but this is not a dedicated spa hotel), and plenty of beautiful Maine little coastal towns to explore.

Curious about this area or combining it with a Northeast trip? Don't miss this intimate gem.

Worth it!
