Posted: 11/29/2011 8:36 am

The winter months are upon us, and so now's the time to think differently about the way you care for your skin. While certain things will remain the same (never skip sunscreen, even when it's raining or snowing!), other aspects of your skin-care routine will change to adapt to the colder, harsher weather. You can easily beat the cold-weather doldrums by taking control of your skin care -- and you'll look better, too!

Tackle this winter season with these quick tips that keep you looking great and feeling fabulous.

Go through your make-up bag and decide which items have expired, gotten goopy, or simply need to get tossed. Bacteria can grow on your cosmetics, and you definitely do not want that on your skin, especially around your eyes. If you've had mascara for more than three months, toss it! Similarly foundation has a shelf life of approximately one year, depending upon its ingredients (oils, talc, fillers). While you're at it: Clean your brushes and applicators with mild soap and water and leave them to air dry.

Perhaps we should use the same thinking dentists do: the mouth reflects the overall health of the body. A healthy body that exercises and eat well will have a strong foundation for glowing, vivacious skin. BTW, the healthy blush is due to dilation of the superficial vessels of the skin!

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It is an organ of elimination.

In traditional oriental medicine, there are lines or meridians along the outside the body, with various psubos or pressure points, that relate to certain internal organs.

So while external treatment can beautify, it is helpful to look at the body as a whole

Some of the best products for the skin:

--aloe vera gel. you can buy a leaf in an ethnic market and squeeze out the gel. Or buy a 99% gel.

--baby virgin coconut butter. In hot weather, it melts into oil

--sweet almond oil. expensive but worth it.

--salts from the dead sea--dip a wash cloth into a soution of several tbsp. in a few cups of warm water, and apply to the face.

I'm taking advice from a spray tan maven? I don't think so...
