Castro's sister says she collaborated with CIA

AP | LAURA WIDES-MUNOZ | Posted 10.26.2009 | Home

MIAMI — One of Fidel Castro's sisters says in a memoir released Monday that she collaborated with the CIA against her brother, starting shortly after the United States' failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961.

Juanita Castro, 76, initially supported her brother's 1959 overthrow of the Batista dictatorship but quickly grew disillusioned. In a Spanish-language memoir published by Santillana USA and co-written by journalist Maria Antonieta Collins, she says the wife of the Brazilian ambassador to Cuba persuaded her to meet a CIA officer during a trip to Mexico in 1961.

By then, her house had already become a sanctuary for anti-communists, and Fidel Castro had warned her about getting involved with the "gusanos," or worms, as those who opposed the revolution were called.

Castro said in the book, "My Brothers Fidel and Raul. The Secret Story," that she traveled to Mexico City under the pretense of visiting her younger sister Enma. There she also secretly met a CIA officer who identified himself as "Enrique" at the elegant Camino Real hotel.

A spokesman for the CIA in Langley, Va., declined to comment on Castro's account.

Doctor: Burned Fla. teen 'not out of woods yet'

AP | TAMARA LUSH | Posted 10.14.2009 | Home

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — A 15-year-old doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire after he turned in another teen for trying to steal his father's bicycle is at extremely high risk for organ failure and infection, his doctor said Wednesday.

Michael Brewer was heavily sedated and breathing with a ventilator at Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center in Miami and Dr. Nicholas Namias said he is doing as well as can be expected but is not "out of the woods yet."

Brewer's troubles started when 15-year-old Matthew Bent gave him a video game and expected him to pay $40 for it, Broward County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Leljedal. Brewer never paid for the game, which authorities would not identify, so Bent tried to steal a $500 custom bike that belonged to Brewer's father, Leljedal said.

Brewer called authorities over the weekend and Bent was arrested, then released Monday. Brewer refused to attend classes at his middle school that day and instead went to an apartment complex to visit a friend. He told deputies that while he was sitting by the swimming pool, he was splashed with rubbing alcohol and set ablaze.

A neighbor heard his screams for help and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, said his sister, Malissa Durkee. The teen ripped off his shirt and jumped into the pool, but he was still burned over 65 percent of his body.

Weakening Tropical Storm Patricia nears Mexico

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — Officials closed schools and readied emergency shelters as Tropical Storm Patricia neared Mexico's Los Cabos resorts on Tuesday.

The storm's winds weakened to 50 mph (85 kph) on Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Further weakening was expected during the next 24 hours.

The storm was located about 85 miles (135 kilometers) south-southeast of the tourist-heavy tip of the Baja peninsula and it was moving toward the north at near 7 mph (11 kph).

In Cabo San Lucas, tourists awoke to cloudy skies and intermittent rain Tuesday as hotel workers began putting away beach furniture and shutting down all open-air activities.

"The beach is empty and there is little activity at our pool area because tourists are staying in their rooms," said Casa Dorada Hotel general manager Victor Gomez. "Unfortunately for the tourist, the entertainment options have been limited but we hope to be back to normal by tomorrow or Thursday."

Miami firm says it will lay first US-Cuba fiber

AP | PETER SVENSSON | Posted 10.13.2009 | Home

NEW YORK — A small Miami-based company says the U.S. government has given it permission to lay the first optical communications fiber from the U.S. to Cuba. That could drastically cut the cost of calling the island nation and make the Internet more accessible to Cubans.

The Treasury Department could not immediately confirm that TeleCuba Communications Inc. has received approval. The Obama administration eased long-standing restrictions on telecom links to Cuba in April.

TeleCuba says its cable will be operating by the middle of 2011. It still needs final permission from the Cuban government to land the cable. Also, while the cable could make calling very cheap, the Cuban government will set rates, and could keep restrictions on Internet access as well.
