After last night's debate, it's clear that Paul Ryan has a lot to learn when it comes to foreign policy. As an Afghan War Veteran, I can unequivocally say that he hasn't a clue as to what is going on in Afghanistan.
Do we have national interest in the region? Well, yes, but that means Pakistan, not Afghanistan. There is no evidence that squatting in Afghanistan is doing anything for safeguarding Pakistan's nuclear weapons.
In reality, the American mission in Afghanistan failed years ago. It's as if we refused to notice, but the Afghans we were training did. Now, they are sending a message that couldn't be blunter or grimmer from that endlessly war-torn land.
Obama's Nobel lecture might have showed us that the US has reached a turning point: either the national security monster we've created is going to eat us alive by bankrupting the country or we're going to have to shift course.
