Am I pretty? I remember the first time one of my twin daughters asked me this question, dressed in pink, blonde curls unruly, chubby child feet with painted toes, staring in the mirror, looking through her reflected self to me.
We cannot blame teen girls for the ferociously sexist social environment they have no choice but to live in. Maybe what the girls in these YouTube videos are saying isn't: I don't feel pretty. Maybe it's actually: I feel completely powerless when it comes to my sexuality.
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" It's been two centuries since the Brothers Grimm and, amazingly, that question and that magical mirror from Snow White are still around. Today, the magical mirror is called the internet.
