There's good reason to think that intellectualism is on the ropes, but maybe this will change now that we have in the White House a guy who actually understands nuance and complexity.

In the end, this isn't even about Palin. It's about us. Any society with its priorities straight would have watched Palin last night and, regardless of ideological beliefs, ruled her out as a candidate for the vice presidency.

I don't want someone who believes their biggest asset is that they know what it's like to shop at WalMart and take their kids to hockey practice in a mini-van. How will that help in negotiations and diplomatic missions with other heads of state?
