Unequal opportunity helps explain why certain groups of people tend to end up poor, but it does not explain why we have poverty. The real causes of poverty are two-fold: lack of jobs and too many jobs paying poverty-level wages.
On July 4th, we will celebrate the 18th century birth of a new nation, conceived in liberty and committed to justice for all. But there can be no genuine liberty for those without the economic and social capacity to enjoy it.
To move forward, America's security and prosperity depend on our children's ability to drive the economy of the future. Leaders must craft budget solutions that will protect the already porous safety nets on which so many children and families rely.
