What McCain's speech did not have was the substance to back up the centrist reformism he needs to try to upset Obama.

To some degree it is really Tom Daschle's political machine that has been more important to Barack Obama than franchises controlled by the Daley clan, the Kennedy family, and the Clintons.
The Right's non-party machinery now suddenly has a laser-like focus on creating a "surge" of voters for McCain-Palin. This machinery is vast, strategically targeted, exceptionally well-financed, and ready to rumble.
"As far as I'm concerned he is a 'Baruch,' which means a blessing. He is a blessing to the United States Senate, to America, and to our shared hopes for better, safer tomorrows for all our families."
Tonight, McCain gave us a big dose of Reagan's national greatness flourish in a dignified, genteel and pleasant manner. His speaking style was reminiscent of Reagan -- without the memorable lines.
Only by attacking McCain's and Bush's policies can Democrats put Palin in a corner and make her prove herself.
Only someone with a sick sense of humor would deride activists who toil in Chicago's worst neighborhoods, dedicating time and effort to providing poor and disenfranchised citizens with a voice in the political and social process. Someone with a warped view like Sarah Palin, the Republican Party's newly-crowned vice-presidential nominee. Or Rudy Giuliani, who lusted for the GOP's presidential nod, but instead settled for making a keynote speech Wednesday before the party hopefuls.
Obama understands that we live in a complicated, nuanced world, one in which cowboy-style "straight talk" does little but earn us dismissive laughs from friends and enemies overseas.
Will Obama spend millions in ad dollars tearing down Palin's appealing reformer and maverick image along with McCain's? Don't count on it. But in case they do, here's some material they might draw on.
McCain told the nation that he wants to play nice now, to change the culture of Washington. He might want to run that by his running mate.
What could Obama have possibly been thinking when he told Bill O'Reilly that the Iraq war surge is not only working but working beyond his wildest dreams?
Wednesday night after Sarah Palin's speech, I went to bed with a pit in my stomach that reminded me not of November, 2004, but rather October, 2003.
It is clear that any criticism of Sarah Palin will be interpreted by the Republican campaign as prima facie evidence of elitism.
We'd all love to put aside partisanship and work together to solve issues we have in common, but both conventions illustrated that the divide runs much deeper than lip service.
As long as employers are not proven to be discriminating intentionally, they can pay women less than men if they are not doing the same jobs.
She's exactly the kind of leader America needs: the kind that will always put country first -- even if that country happens to be The Republic of Alaska.

this stuff never goes away. Watched it all my life. Limbaugh thrives on the resentment against blacks without quite crossing the line to overt racism. it is an understood subtext. the whole modern conservative movement is little more than a counter reaction to civil rights and hippies. They hate us for destroying their utopia and challenging their world view. It is only a little disguised now and if enough power can be concentrated I think we might see genocide in this country.
Be proud you're a rebel 'cause the South just did it again ----apologies(?) to the Devil in Georgia
This is the same guy who sponsored a bill requiring that the 10 commandments be posted in public buildings but then could NOT list more than 3 of the 10 commandments when questioned by Stephen Colbert. Being dumber than dirt is not an excuse for using a racial slur like "uppity" -- in fact it usually is a prerequisite for doing it. Here is a link to the Colbert Report interview:

Watch it -- it tells you everything you need to know about this guy...
Great discussion everybody! It made me think of other "code" words like "PC" and "gal". I'm sure there are more to add to the list. Now the righties have given us an new one "elitist" - especially when it is used by people of privilege toward those who actually are not to mask that they are indeed "snobs". Its a red herring.
I am 8 years younger than Westmoreland, raised in California, and the implications of the word rang clear.
