GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- A town used to visitors is preparing for its biggest-ever tourism program.
Between 25,000 and 30,000 visitors per day are expected...
After Vicksburg and Gettysburg, the American aptitude for war would not be questioned again for a very long time. No one except Lincoln and the senior officers of both armies had imagined that the decisive climax of the American constitutional project could be such a noble and terrible combat.
When the Civil War made its way to Pennsylvania, Gettysburg College stood in its midst. Forty eight of the 116 students enrolled in the College at that time abandoned their studies and joined Company A, 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia Regiment.
For Americans, the mere mention of "Four score and seven years ago..." brings to mind President Lincoln giving the address he delivered at Gettysburg 149 years ago on November 19, 1863. But what else do we know about the occasion?
