For 90 minutes, audiences revel in the talented Midler recreating this force of nature, deliciously dish without ever leaving her couch, in Scott Pask's beautifully apportioned set. Such is her charm, even profanity sounds profound.
Aside from the fact that she doesn't sing, the only trepidation I've encountered about Bette Midler's sensational one-woman show I'll Eat You Last, about the sassy, splashy, tart-tongued Hollywood super agent Sue Mengers, is the concern that the Divine Miss M might be playing a colorful "insider" so obscure that the general public has never heard of her. Well, the show is such a smash and the Divine Miss M never more divine that you'll be lucky if you can beg, borrow or steal a ticket to get in.
I won't apologize here for not giving the star of this escapade her full due! I guess I think too much of Bette Midler to try to analyze her.

Last night Bette Midler made a triumphant return to Broadway for the first time in 30 years, playing the brash superagent Sue Mengers in John Logan's one-woman show I'll Eat You Last. It was a bravura performance.
I loved Bette, the set, Logan's book and the intimacy created with Sue on the couch and we the uninvited dinner guests in our armchairs. Sheer genius in every detail.
Tuning into the gossip the Divine Miss M spews jubilantly as another Divine Miss M is such fun it hardly matters that five minutes after the romp ends, much of the dirt dished with such five-alarm relish has completely faded in the cool night air.

I have one piece of advice for Ms. Midler, which I hope she takes. I hope she can refrain from obsessing about the roles she should have taken, because while she might have played it safe in some ways, she was a pioneer in others. She is full of life and she is still developing.
