Dancers are in a state of fear, constantly worried about who may upstage them, who may take their role, who may be better than them and how they can improve to fight to dance another year. They dance on borrowed time, knowing full well that in their world, you have until about the age of 30-35 before you are done. Not because of any outright ageism, but because the body changes and ballet does not.
