One of my dad's favorite sayings has always been, "Hindsight is always 20/20." And you can bet that I rolled my eyes every time I heard him say it as I grew up. But looking back on this experience with a year's worth of hindsight tells me my dad was absolutely right to always remind me of that.
Not one person asked me how I got the black eye. Not the waitresses or the bartender, not the clerks behind the counters in the shops. Certainly, not the gas station attendant. Nobody asked. In fact, most people just kept their eyes averted from my face.
