The Republicans have always opposed regulation of business that protects the "little people" against greed-ridden and corrupt practices of insatiable corporate elites.

"The bathroom," our busdriver Jerry announced, "is like an outhouse. So don't use it unless it's an emergency. An' if you do have to use it, put the lid down. That'll help keep the smell down for the people in the back." Five rows from the back of the bus, I observed those around me looking uncomfortably at one another.

Karl Rove knows that if you repeat a message over and over, people will eventually believe it. For this technique to work, however, one must stick to a simple theme and be consistent. John McCain didn't get that memo.

Although I wasn't that much older than most of the students in the room, I found myself amazed by their liveliness and curiosity. Their questions were pointed and drenched with concern. They earnestly welcomed the opportunity to put us on the spot.

It's getting crazy down here in Dixie. When we're not talking to ourselves, we're talking to everybody else -- whether they want to listen or not. Yada-yada-Muslim, yada-yada-antichrist, yada-yada-doesn't-want-America-to-win, yada-yada-he's-a-commie-socialist!

Most of the poll workers are elderly, and not particularly adept at using the computers. My agent took almost five minutes to find me in the system and issue me a ballot. One woman who exited the polling place after half an hour was apparently dead, even though she looked quite well.

I hear real fear in voices when friends and neighbors say they don't know how they will pay their gas bill this winter, how they can possibly raise the money they need to send their children to college. Or how the price of everything keeps going up.

In this small Italian town at the base of the Alps, I could watch the presidential debate in English on CNN, in English on the BBC and on no less than three other channels shown with a slight delay and translated instantly into Italian.

There may be good reasons to vote the Republican ticket, but the hope that John McCain will bring change to Washington cannot be counted as one of them.

Why shouldn't a Muslim child born and raised in the U.S. not be able to dream that she could one day be the president of the U.S.?

Our friend Joe the Plumber, for instance, can post yearly receipts of up to $14 million -- and still be considered a small businessman.

"A lot of my students say voting is not as important in the post civil rights world ... I first encourage them to become more involved in the political process. The more you understand the process, the more you understand how important the right to vote is."

In the political dialogue of soccer moms, bubbas, the liberal elite, family values, Joe Six-Packs, and the omnipresent nuclear family, the poor have all but become invisible. It's not trendy to talk about the poor in an age dominated by bootstrap philosophies, plastic surgery, jogging suits, and positive thinking mantras.

The taxes on Joe-the-Plumber's $250,000 bought me my first-grade textbooks when my family was on food stamps. I do not feel guilty that Joe may have had to drink less-expensive champagne that year so that I could have a sandwich for dinner.

Enough with the campaign promises. That's not what we need right now, especially since most of the promises probably won't happen anyway. What we need is a president who respects others. Especially the women-folk.

McCain could have been a real "maverick" and told his party that he opposes the Bush Tax Cuts just like he originally did. But no. That's because McCain is not a true leader when it comes to the economic crisis this country faces.
