Not many of my friends know I ever used to be an athlete. I forget myself, until a pedicurist notices my hammertoes or I have a dream about striding down the homestretch after a race, feeling that last surge of power.
This is where you come in. Look into your child's sports. Check up on their health, on their coach, on how often they have practice. You have to be persistent! But you may just end up saving your child's ankle, leg, arm, or even his or her life.
Seventy percent of kids give up sports entirely by age 13. When asked by Michigan State University researchers why they quit sports, kids almost universally said, "It's not fun anymore."
None of this will help them get into college -- or, sheesh, high school! But all these things will be an advantage in life -- now and later -- because they are likely to lead to happiness.
Tiger comes to mind every Father's Day when I start to think about the complex impact dads and their dreams, even obsessions, about sports success have on their sons (and ever more often now, on their daughters).
