While I can accept that some of their critiques have solid foundations -- I love selfies and have now switched most of my newspaper and magazine subscriptions over to my iPad -- I won't stand by and watch an entire generation be labeled "whiny."
Regardless of the size of the institution or its location, college students are dealing with immense stresses that are leading to unhealthy outcomes. And it cannot be comforting that these kinds of problems are not isolated, but rather recognized by students nation-wide.
There have been wide scale efforts to educate students and families on other public health crises. It is now time to create effective programs to help young people and everyone involved in their lives learn about mental health.
As I talk to more and more of my peers and learn about the inner workings of the university's mental health resources, I am confronting an unfortunate reality: there are many students who have or are currently dealing with mental health issues in one way or another.
