The function of Ex-Im is to subsidize businesses that export American products. The major problem with this agency comes from the fact that a big bulk of Ex-Im funds go to huge, wealthy companies, such as the Ex-Im's largest beneficiary Boeing, which in 2013 received 30 percent of its loans and guarantees.
First, find who his or her biggest corporate donors are. Then check his or her record on policies that may impact the bottom lines of those companies. Does she support or oppose financial-sector reform? Has he recently signed a letter or released a statement opposing EPA curbs to coal-plant emissions?
One interesting issue to come out of Cantor's totally unexpected defeat is the feasibility -- or lack thereof -- of the delicate dance the majority leader tried to do: snuggle up real close to business and especially, in Cantor's case, financial markets on the one hand, and claim far right street cred on the other.
