If President Obama plans to keep his campaign promise, the White House and the Pentagon had better get on the same page now, and be ready to face the tough questioning sure to come.

Most normal people today really don't care in which direction a person's sexual compass points, except as the subject of gossip and the gossip goes both ways, so to speak.


There is no question that our next president is facing a host of truly awful problems. Cut the Administration some slack regarding Don't Ask Don't Tell, yes -- but not too much.

While I understand the anger from the gay-rights community over the Warren issue, I myself am waiting to see some solid results from Obama before judging him.

To get rid of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" we must proceed deliberately and according to a plan, which will not require grandstanding, but rather actual leadership.

While this will not be an easy fight, it also won't likely be a return to the belabored hearings of the Clinton presidency which produced the Bizarro World Don't Ask, Don't Tell non-policy of not asking what nobody's saying.

"Don't Ask Don't Tell" is not an issue of one party versus another. It's a matter of military readiness and what's best for the country.

Senator Clinton gave a performance that even Maureen described as "electrifying." Until I read the Dowd column this morning, I thought the hardest of the hardcore Hillary haters would be won over. But no.

Don't buy into the media narrative that this is some sort of "divided party" -- because today's Democrats aren't. All true Democrats are pulling hard to defeat the legacy of George W. Bush.

Being gay should be no more of a barrier to serving the United States military than being black now is. My guess is that sixty years from now, people will wonder what took us so long.

Sam Nunn will not be on the ticket with Obama. But if he would like to be offered the job of Secretary of State or Defense, he has to tell Obama that he supports repealing DADT -- and he has to mean it.

Any serious discussion of the crisis the country faces in recruiting and retaining qualified men and women in the military will require a fresh and serious look at the odious "compromise" known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

What is often overlooked is that the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy was supposed to be a way station on the road to full acceptance of homosexuals in the military.

At the very time the Pentagon is actively recruiting to keep its numbers up, soldiers who happen to be openly gay are being treated as though they are convicted felons and unceremoniously booted out.

With Don't Ask, Don't Tell, gays and bisexuals are not free to be themselves in the armed forces of their country. In addition to everything else that this law is -- costly, inefficient, unfair -- it is disgraceful.
