I spent New Year's Eve at the red-blooded, all-American epicenter of college football: at the Chick-fil-A Bowl, next to Dan Cathy, as his personal guest. It was among the most unexpected moments of my life.

I think it's great that Dan Cathy has so proudly come out against marriage equality. Cathy was far more dangerous to equality when on the down-low. Now, even non-LGBT people have to think about where their lunch bucks actually stop.

What 50 Cent meant when he said, "Anyone that has an issue with Frank Ocean is an idiot," wasn't that homophobia is an irrational social prejudice. He was saying that for anyone who owns, manages, or speaks for a business, airing your personal opinions about queer people is an idiotic business strategy.

Dan Cathy obviously has the right to say whatever he wants and donate money to whomever he chooses -- like all Americans. But let's get real: I feel that because the people he's targeted are just the gays, few are standing up to him.
