It may seem obvious that Aaliyah needed help dealing with the sadness and emotional turmoil caused by her mother's incarceration. Unfortunately, like so many other children in the District, she couldn't get timely help.

The perception of Washington, D.C. is not the reality of D.C. We have green grass, and big trees, and several blue ribbon elementary schools and we are more than a one-or-two-industry-wonder, thanks to technology and a vibrant new start-up scene.
Corruption in D.C. damages our chances for full voting rights and cheats District residents. Recent federal prosecutions, along with a cascade of elections, may help clean out the D.C. Council. But we need more.
