Yesterday was the first day I got a chance to see the now infamous BP oil disaster up close and as expected, we found oil a few miles from shore, several miles closer than where the NRDC team had seen it the day before.

This disaster is a tragic reminder that offshore drilling is dirty and dangerous. It leaves no doubt that we need tighter regulation of where and how oil companies drill. But it would be an historic mistake if our response ends there.
We believe that, in light of this recent tragedy, there should be a time-out on any action to proceed with new offshore drilling until there has been a full and independent investigation of the causes of this blowout.
