Seventy golfers from the United States and Canada joined together on Monday, May 13, 2013 at the Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, New Jersey, to raise awareness and money for the orphans served by Worldwide Orphans Foundation.

What about Mother's Day for orphan boys and girls? Is this a bad thing to ask...hurtful and painful?Most kids in orphanages have no clue about this day, but one of our faithful American volunteers, Sarah Poole and her husband, Adam, did a cultural turn about for this day in Ethiopia.

How do you share the world of orphans with a roomful of supporters halfway around the world? I was faced with this challenge as I attended a Worldwide Orphans fundraiser at the iconic John Lautner Garcia House in the Hollywood Hills.

It is easy to believe in what we are doing. We are in the midst of training our staff to collect data as we monitor and evaluate our strategies to create change for the orphans and at-risk youngsters in Kenscoff.

Where is our humanity? There should be an outcry internationally to censure Putin for his evil act to lock up and ruin hundreds of thousands of children.

We all need to go deeper and do better to advocate and protect children globally. We need a wider strategic plan for every bad moment when children can't have permanency and can't have what they are entitled to have: quite simply safety and love.

Life is very hard and we deal with challenging issues daily. When talking about the tragic deaths of children, we must keep the dialogue alive and be conscious.

I just returned from a short jaunt to Sofia, Bulgaria; the fastest trip I ever planned. What was so compelling about this trip as compared to my many trips to Bulgaria over the 17 years since my first time?

Child abandonment is about poverty and the desperation that ensues. Young women are not educated and able to make their own decisions. They are abused and used by men who are also uneducated, depressed, angry and powerless.

This Thanksgiving Processional moves me to think of WWO Academy in Ethiopia. I envision the extremely poor 432 children at our school having a similar processional celebrating their harvest and singing their traditional hymns.

Children living through adversity all over the world need opportunities to talk about their feelings and thoughts. They must create their belief systems, and they need to remember and forget just as my children do.

I am reminded every year that Thanksgiving is a precious holiday for my family.

Hunger and exhaustion can come with this way of life as well. Children live like this... orphans live like this all day and all night.

We went to Haiti as a family so that our boys do service with the Worldwide Orphans Foundation (WWO) programs. The day of the big WWO soccer tournament was filled with excitement and ceremony, but there were quieter moments, too.

Imagine, these kids who have lived all their lives in Haiti have never been tourists in their own country. They have never seen anything except their extremely poor surroundings in Port-au-Prince. I felt sad at this realization, but so pleased that we could give them this opportunity.

Though I have been working abroad for more than twenty years, I am renewed on every trip and never eager to leave.
